Thumbs down Substandard AirTel 3G service in Mumbai

I was a bit excited when 3G finally came to Mumbai. I was waiting for it since ages. Although ads flaunted 21 Mbps, I was keeping my expectations to 2 Mbps on my Nokia N82 which is capable of 3.6 Mbps on HSPA network.

So sent an SMS to 121 & service was activated within two minutes. I activated 10MB Rs 8 data plan just to check. I was expecting that access point settings would automatically be delivered via SMS but it wasn't a case. So finally called Customer CARE they didn't even knew about it. They gave some rash answers like change network mode to dual mode which I had already done. During that I discovered that call quality was dropped. Called few friends to confirm that. So I tried using airtel live settings and it was a success. But as soon as disconnected data charge was deducted from balance. So searched on net and finally used Mobile Office settings w/o proxy settings. Connected again and it was a success just to discover pathetic speed of service. I was barely getting 5-10 KBPS. I was using Nokia N82 (3.6Mbps HSPA modem) but it seemed as if I was browsing on my 6600 on GPRS. There wasnt a way to find out that how much data I have used. Just warning message when you reach 90% limit.

Frustrated me disconnected 3G service and went back to good old EDGE. Speeds were back to life at 25 to 30 KBPS.

A word of advice to everyone. First try 8 Rs plan, check the connectivity in your area and then activate higher plans. Otherwise there is every chance that your money will be wasted.

    if not then do try,
nowadays every operator i capping speed based on RC done on a number.
i suffered a lot with tata and bsnl regarding the same issue and found that this is the case with all operators.

Ya I know that operators cap the speeds. But still it doesn't make sence to cap 21Mbps connection to 10 KBps. Its real shame.
