Thread: Rarely getting a 3G signal

HI,

I recently purchased a n Airtel 3g modem. BUt all get is 2G speeds. It shows EDGE Airtel. I did a manual search but there was no Airtel 3g in the list.

The Airtel guy said "if there is no signal there is nothing much one can do"

I have called them again. They will be visiting my place day after tomorrow.

I live in Kolkata & my temporary residence is at Bhowanipur. Previously I got 3G signals at a different location. But isn't all of Kolkata receiving Airtel 3G signals ?

Anybody using Airte 3G in Kolkata please share your experience. If not a problem please mention your area, like Kalighat, Garia, etc

you need to use vodafone 3g to try airtel 3g in kolkata region.

what is the modem make & model ? ( Huawei or Micromax?)
Did you put proper "APN "if there is no associated Airtel software?
Did you buy any 3G pack recharge apart from modem?
First did you put the sim in a HSPDA mobile phone and called the computer & activated it?
Did you send message "ACT 3G:" to 12134 ?some times only after you see 3G signal in the phone ,you should insert in the data card!
Is the data card locked? Can you get other operator 3G sim and check whether data card getting signal in your current location?
Did you not get a demo with 3G signal from where you bought?
with out telling your disease symptoms in detail how are you going to get medicine? The idiots in customer service usually dont know any thing!

I got a software for my Linux OS on the modem/storage itself & installlation went without much trouble. Therefore the APN name is set & so are other configurations.
The message "ACT 3G" was sent by the guy at the store.

Yes, I purchased the Rs750 pack.

I don't have a 3g enabled phone.

I got 3G signals from the house where I used to stay a couple of days back. Blazing fast.

But where I am now there is no 3g whatsoever. Even 2G is difficult to receive.

I am not allowed to post external links before I reach 15 posts.

Any ideas ?

^cant find Vodafone

Its confirmed now. There is no 3G signal at Bhowanipur. I am getting 2G much stable than before.

I am back home & getting 3G here.

In Kolkata (Jadavpur area), I saw Airtel GSM and Airtel WCDMA networks listed separately, and also Vodafone WCDMA. Obviously, only the Airtel WCDMA version gives me 3G; the GSM network gives me EDGE. Connecting to Vodafone does not work.

It is possible that some phones or data cards connect automatically to the GSM network under some circumstances, and must be manually connected to the WCDMA network. But since the OP did not see an Airtel WCDMA network at all in the Bhowanipur area, this means there is no 3G signal.

It's true that Vodafone carries the Airtel 3G signal in Kolkata, but it does so by broadcasting the Airtel netwok as well as its own. So either you'll see both Airtel WCDMA and Vodafone WCDMA (as I did), or you won't see either one (as the OP did).
