    Default Limit Bandwidth to a particular IP Address

    I would like to know if there is a way , via software to restrict traffic to a particular IP address on my lan .

    I am connected in the following way .

    ADSL Modem -> Switch -> Desktop / Laptop

    I have set static IP's for both machines

    Desktop = 192.168.1.6
    Laptop = 192.168.1.2
    Default Gateway = 192.168.1.1

    I have a 256 Kbps unltd connection from Airtel .

    Is there a way to split the traffic 50/50 128kbps for the desktop , 128 Kbps for the laptop ? cause the moment my brother starts downloading the switch dedicates all of the 256 Kbps to his machine , my browsing begins to crawl then

    Therez a proxy server s/w CCProxy... Its easy to configure... And its free for upto 3 users... It can be used to limit ur brother's bandwidth to 128kBps... but for that u've to go for client-server architecture... It means ur PC will act as server... And ur brother's PC will be Client... Ur brother's PC will have to share internet connection from ur PC rather than directly from router/switch... But for this arrangement... U've to leave ur PC running all the time whenever ur brother would like to use internet...

    U can download ccproxy from the link... & u'll get more information about the configuration part from this site itself... still any doubts... this forum will welcome u...

    Do I have to add an extra lan card on my machine for this to work ?

    when u say he would have to connect to my system directly ! does that mean that he would have to connect directly to a lan card on my system or can I just install CCProxy and then restrict traffic to his IP address while connected to the same switch .

    ADSL Modem -> Switch -> My Desktop / His Laptop

    Or

    His Laptop <-> My Desktop -> Switch -> ADSL Modem

    [ Sounds like im totally confused na ] :16:

    Yeah... your desktop should have 2 lancards... one for connecting to switch... and other will connect to the laptop...

    Yeah, therez one more way... Go wi-fi...
    Purchase a usb wi-fi adapter for ur PC(must come around Rs. 300)... Ur brother's laptop probably already have wi-fi.. if not get 1 for him too... Its better cuz u won't have to use Lan cable in between PC & laptop...
    Use ur lan-card to connect to switch like it is right now...

    I am not sure about limiting bandwidth to a particular IP, but it is possible to disallow internet connection (but allow LAN access) in some routers. My latest UT-300R2U v 2.2 allows this.
