Default Airtel Broadband in Delhi

Hi all
I've been thinking of switching my ISP to Airtel (first thought of MTNL, but people recommended not to use MTNL...).
I was thinking of going for the Airtel 649 UL plan, and I had a few questions...

Is Airtel good in Delhi? I mean, do you get speeds as promised and how much is the downtime?

I'm asking all this 'cause I've been a user of Tata; Their pathetic service drove me nutz and so I switched over to Hathway 2 years back.

Cheers

hmm...yeah so I've heard, that's why I was thinking of making a switch.
btw, just wanted to ask, Airtel is providing the option of chosing a modem or a router for the connection, does it make any difference? Please explain
I've read about modems and routers in class at school...but, well...who pays attention to school anyways :P

Airtel is good in Delhi/NCR but unfortunately it is not available in all places. So check whether it is available in your area. If it is, then it is highly recommended. Else go with MTNL. Both are better than all others - Sify, Tata Indicom, Hathway, etc.

choose any router u like , it hardly makes a difference until u want to use more than 1 pc at a time.

Yes, it is available at my place, they were here recently to promote it, that's why I thought about getting Airtel

Cool, thanks for the info

And guys, just one more question...I'm a die-hard IRC user (Undernet IRC Network), you must have read my earlier posts on how they blocked Undernet in India...

So, I was just wondering if any of you Airtel guys can connect to Undernet or not...
I mean, yes I know the whole of Undernet is blocked and all...but these two server's are still working (as of this writing):

montreal.qc.ca.undernet.org
oslo2.no.eu.undernet.org

I cannot live without IRC, seriously...so if Airtel won't connect to these server...I'll most probably drop the idea of giving it a go.

Can you please confirm if these two are working or not with your connection?

Here's how to check...
1. Connect to them via telnet or an irc client (like mIRC)
or
2. Ping the server's:
In the command prompt, type:
Code:
ping oslo2.no.eu.undernet.org
or
3. Use traceroute:
In the command prompt, type:
Code:
tracert oslo2.no.eu.undernet.org
I'll be really really really really greatful to you if you provide me with this info

Airtel broadband is alright but its not available everywhere in Delhi as Just4kix said earlier.

Try airtel if not get tata wimax or reliance wimax as after the initial hiccups they are both working fine.

I would recomend tata over reliance just because you can get a pre paid connection with tata and reliance is only post paid and they also have a disconnection charge which tata doesnt.

the 649 (~730 inc taxes) is very good... i am on it. Previously used to spend 840 bucks (inc taxes) for 150kbps on reliance wimax . This was a welcome change.
the speeds are MORE than promised . There is never a connection drop (depends on ur line tho), except when there's work goin on on their servers. There might b a few problems in the first ~4 days, but they resolve quickly on their own (its no rule though )

IMO get it soon if its in ur area.

hmmm...yeah, I've heard about wimax, but as I am a desktop user and I don't really need WiMax, I think I'll be pretty good with the fixed lines
Anyways, thanks for the information, Admin

wow, sounds great
Good to see that there are so many positive reviews about Airtel

Now, just a teensy little problem I have...
I'm all hooked up for switching to Airtel, but still, I do want to know if people of Airtel can access Undernet IRC network (as my previous post mentions, scroll up a little )
So if anyone can tell me that it works or not, it would be great!
If it works, them I'm almost 100% certain I'll go for Airtel, but if not, I'll have to think twice...so I'm counting on you guys to provide me this info.

Cheers

hi StarryKnight
Does those two server's I posted in my other post work?
I know when connecting to irc.undernet.org it does not connect (but that is a normal problem).
The server's I am talking about are:
oslo2.no.eu.undernet.org and montreal.qc.ca.undernet.org
If you could access these two server's, then please let me know asap!
*Jumps around in excitement* lol

PING TO oslo2.no.eu.undernet.org SAYS REQUEST TIMES OUT. And if in your Airtel is available go only for it. As per my experience from last 9 months i had not faced downtime for a single day. Except for 2 hour downtime once. AS for spped in 256kbps you get around 300kbps minimum. So go for it.

And about customer support one of the best. Just call local engineer and he will be at your doorstep within an hour(offcourse during work timings)
