    No. It isn't free.

I used wi-fi at Mumbai airport - they sell pre-paid card for Rs. 100/125 that gives connectivity for one hour - unlimited usage.

That is right. It is not free I am sure about that as I have been there but never bothered to check the prices.
Is there anyone else who has some more information about the charges and speed?

    Thanks

If Mumbai airport is anything to go by (powered by Reliance, I think), Delhi should be OK too. I got around 256 kbps, I think. That is fine for surfing and e-mails.

The cost of MTNL wifi in delhi is available here
    MAHANAGAR TELEPHONE NIGAM LTD.
It ranges from Rs. 25 for 30 min(1 day validity) to Rs.2000 for 163 hrs (1 yr validity)
Airtel Delhi must be similar to Mumbai only.
In case of Hotels, generally only 4/5 star hotels provide complementary wifi service. others ask u to buy prepaid cards or charge to the room bill

    Default DEL wi-fi

Flew through the Delhi airport last night. There is free wi-fi throughout the international departure terminal (e.g. on the "inside" of immigration), supplied by Airtel, but to get past the access points' splash screen, you need to enter either a coupon code or a login/password. I have no idea where the coupon codes could be got, but the login/password for one hour's free use is SMSed to anyone who submits their GSM number. The catch is that only domestic (Indian) GSM numbers work; the page says you can use other countries'--and gives an example of a US number--but it didn't work for either my US or French GSM numbers (both of which are fully roaming-capable and which did handshake with Indian partner GSM providers for normal use in India). I had to ask Indian citizens sitting next to me if I could "use" their number to receive the credentials. And then I had to do it again ... every hour, to renew. Better than nothing, but rather disappointing compared to expectations. <shrug>
I can't say I tried to measure the speed--it worked "fine," but I wasn't watching live HD TV, or even Skype/voice.

The "coupons" have to be purchased at authorize Airtel retail points. Most restaurants also sell these.

    Default fee or free

So I suppose you could pay for a coupon, or--if you have an Indian mobile phone--get free login info via an SMS.

I doubt whether it is free. Even if you have an Indian mobile, you will probably be charged post-paid usage charges.

    But I may be wrong.

    Default free?

The implication on the Airtel page you get when you latch on to one of their access points in DEL is that it's free. I don't know, because I don't have an Indian GSM number. But the fact that the staff of the transit area lounges & restaurant are reasonably willing to allow you to use their GSM numbers to receive the Airtel one-hour codes implies to me that they, too, know it's free. I get the feeling they encounter lots of travelers with the same request ... "help, please!" ... and they enjoy being able to help. If they could say "go to the desk over there and buy a coupon," I rather suspect they would; I would even expect them to sell (or buy/resell) the coupons themselves. Just speculation ... (FWIW, let me leave a shout-out to those staff, who thus leave an impression on travelers of helpfulness ...)

seems similar to AT& T International calling cards. ( NOT FREE.).
    addl info:
    Calling from UK

    1. Dial the AT&T access number provided above 0-800-89-0011
    2. An English-language voice prompt will ask you for the telephone number you are calling. enter 1-800-830-2492
    * When prompted, dial the AT&T PrePaid Phone Card PIN or Account Number. 492xxxxxxxxxxx
    3. For calls to the U.S., Canada or the Caribbean, press 1 and follow the prompts.
    * Dial the U.S. area code and 7-digit number you are calling. 5x-8xx-4xxx
    4. To place another call, do not hang up, press # and follow the prompts.
for different countries code is different. STEP 1.
