Thread: Shifting to Airtel from MTNL ADSL

Hey guys,

I am currently using MTNL ADSL Night Unlimited Plan (Rs.590/month & 2 GB Download Limit. which I always exceed). I download around 3-4 GB per month. If I get an unlimited plan I can download a lot more. But, I am quite tight on budget.

But still I am looking to switch my ISP. Below are some of the points to be noted,



The earlier their bandwith was pretty good, but now it sucks to the core. I just get around 19 - 21 KB/s. This is 1 major reason why I am looking to change my ISP.

- Zero downtime (i.e. from their server), but the router and the splitter they have provided once started giving problems. I kept complaining to their Cust Support also visited the Exchange, but noone cared to come and check their hardware. Later I complained to their GM and the problem was solved next day. So, their Cust Service also sucks hard.

Now regarding Airtel, some people have given me a negative review. That their Cust Service is not good and the Internet remains down at times and that the speed is also very bad.

So, its a dicy situation for me.

Get hold of one of your neighbors who are using Airtel Broadband and try their reveiws. Dont fall for the words of people who are from other parts of the country, as ISPs provide various levels of QOS on varied parts of the country.

Who has given a bad review to airtel to you!!?? ...

if u check my posts in the airtel section and many many others u will find that nearly all of us say that there is absolutely no downtime with airtel,
if it happens it is because of server maintenance which fixes in about 15mins at max!, at least for delhi.


Regarding speed, then i must tell you that all airtel subscribers get MORE than the stated speed of the plan. I myself get about 300kbps in my 256kbps plan., so is the case with others.

their customer care is also quite good (but i never had the occasion to contact them for any serious problem ), in most cases the maintenance engineer of ur area will tell u to contact him instead of the cc which in turn helps in a speedy solution to ur problem (if in the rare case that there is)

One advice, Search around the forums before jumping to any conclusion about airtel.... its the one bb service in india with which almost all are satisfied with.

What part of India are u from ?

I use Airtel Brodband , happens to be my 6th ISP , I am happy with it .

I download close to 80 GB / month

On 256 Kbps connection u will typically get between 30 to 40 KBps that is way above the theoretical maximum .

Stick with Unlimited dude or you will end up paying a lot on a plan with a bandwidth cap, it's really useless of having a 2Mbps pack with a 1 GB download cap

Also to make the best of my broadband connection , I did the following

1) Brought an Inverter with 4 hrs of battery backup .

2) Enabled Cool&Quiet on my system (AMD) so that when it's idle , the processor automatically gets underclocked to 1GHZ from 2.4 GHZ saving me on electricty , I switch off the monitor , saving more power and remove all unwanted hardware like my add on graphics card essentially making my PC a ultra Cheap Bittorrent Download Box & File Server
(these are times of recession every penny saved counts )

3)Enabled PPPOE mode on my modem so that I don't have to keep my PC on 24x7 for my Bro / dad to use the internet connection .

4)Made a cheap file server so that whatever movies I download via on my system via bittorrent can be shared amongst everyone on my network .

Ram - 1GB
Hard Drive - 1TB x4 = 3.8 TB

Look at the poles dude , how many people voted Airtel as their best ISP ???

I have used pretty much all the Cable , ADSL and WiMax ISP's around and from my personal experience , Airtel has delivered up on uptime and speed .
