Airtel Launches 16 Mbps Broadband In India

Bharti Airtel has announced 16 Mbps broadband – which the company claims to be the fastest wireline broadband on DSL in the country. With 16 Mbps speed, consumers can download a 4 GB high-definition movie within 30 minutes compared with more than 12 hours that a 256 Kbps connection.

This service, powered by Airtel’s Carrier Ethernet Network, will be initially available in the cities of Delhi NCR, Chennai and Bengaluru with phased roll-out to additional cities of Hyderabad, Pune, Mumbai and Kolkata.

Customers can gain access to 16 Mbps broadband by choosing from two tariff plans – Speed Combo 2999 - receive 16 Mbps broadband speed with monthly data transfer limit of 20 GB along with a fixed line connection at Rs 2,999 per month; Speed Combo 4999 – receive 16 Mbps broadband speed with monthly data transfer limit of 50 GB along with a fixed line connection at Rs 4,999 per month.

They have two plans on offer:
    • Rs. 2999 with a 20GB data transfer limit
    • Rs. 4999 with a 50GB data transfer limit
This service is powered with company’s Carrier Ethernet Network.

It is currently available in limited regions in Delhi NCR, Chennai and Bangalore.

They are soon going to launch it in other areas like Hyderabad, Pune, Mumbai and Kolkata.

Currently, 8 Mbps broadband connection is only being offered to enterprises at Rs 1,299 for up to 4 GB of download in New Delhi. In India, the average broadband speed at present is 256 Kbps while in countries such as France and Korea, this is in excess of 16 Mbps.

Either way they are just the most idiotic persons ever seen on this planet...! buggers giving 16mbps speed and 20 gb limit...? even if you give 200 gb its very less for that speed....! Idiots...

200gb would still be understandable... broadband is still infant here in India.. It will probbably take another 2-3 years to get some decent broadband prices and speed.

At the moment ISP are just looting customers due to lack of competetion. In UK you get to choose from 10-15 different companies and here in India you normally have just one broadband provider in your area and thats what you get.

has the thought now crossed the idiots' minds that why not just give decent speeds (2-4mbps) and limits (maybe 150-200gigs if at all), instead of a crazy speed and crazier limits!? !

i seriously don't know what and how these guys think...

Offtopic : wow nice to see you Admin....

yes Broadband is still in Infant stage in India. I said 200 gb is also less because here most of the people will just download movies... and at that speed they can download tons.... but as you said manageable. but 20gb, 40gb is just impossible..

as far as downloading movies is concerned, why not spend the 3000-4000 bucks on original disks instead of giving the money to these f***ers and promoting piracy?

I support this point SK, thats why i have stopped downloading movies from torrents. I have made contract with local dealer who calls me for any new movie and gives me DVD's at discount rates...!

I too download some movies but only which are very old like in the times of Sholey etc.. which i wont get in market...

i think we can call this as

    === fall of sunrise ===

    16 mbps speed:47:=> sunrise :rockon:

20/50 gb limit falls this sunrise... :6:

i guess if they dont spend there crores of money in signing stars like shahrukh khan saif ali khan and kareen kapoor etc etc then they could have afford 200 gb in bandwidth ,,,,,:w00t: but it's INDIA who cares there management will think like we have the starts we have the customers....unk:

stupid companies can't understand, only thing customers want is just quality services. take a look at bsnl they provide speed at very law rates ( some exceptions in speed and too much unsupportive support staff is extra you get as a service ) still people goes for bsnl because they atleast provide good speed at great rates.:cool2:

i would have considered it if at least the price would have been reasonable,
but apparently they want their subscribers to be fools and n00bs so they can screw them even more.
Hope you are reading this Airtel jerks! We all know what you all isp's in India are made off!

They are aiming at a particular section of the market - 18-30yr age group to be specific .......

anyways they r trying to portray this uber-cool class of youngsters (impatient ones) using this scheme lol ....... but they have ended up looking stupid ...... Indian advertisers have no creativity .......

what u can do with this connection

Watch videos without having to wait
    surf / IM mail quickly
Play recently released games on the internet
    upload/download to a certain extent

basically nothing much changes ....... except that u pay thru your nose for it

As internet costs so much in India ... y did nt they just come up with a 4mbps plan ?

    Yep.
The group who normally acts impulsively and rarely make detailed evaluation before taking a decision.

Its basically a plan to dupe people and trap them to pay through their noses.

I'm sure many intending customers must have changed their minds after going through this thread. (after all, not for nothing we get more than 3000 guest visitors daily).

These AIRTEL guys are actually very smart "IDIOTS" who are trying to milk the moolah on their new offering 16 mbps speed........... not worth....... any smart guy will buy original DVDs/CDs rather than spending that much money on downloading pirated movies.............

Looks like a great plan to me.

For a business account Rs 5000 isn't that bad. (At least not when i convert it back to AUD)

I know there are cheaper options around, but when your looking for speed, there doesn't seem to be anything else that quick around.

I want to use it for a small site office, 5 to 10 people using it for email, VPN, files, etc. (remote access from Australia).

Not interested in downloading movies, or anything else. Just the speed.

Any one know what the upload speed is?
