Rep Power: 1 | I am currently using a 1MBPS UNLIMITED DOWNLOAD Airtel Broadband connection in New Delhi, India. I am thinking about upgrading my modem to be a WIFI connection. Now, I have a query. If I use three laptops with the same WIFI, and download something on 1 laptop, will the download speed of the laptop get affected or will it be the same as it is right now on my connection (around 100-120 kbps) . On the other two laptops, I will simply be browsing, not downloading anything in particular. Please help, and any other information you can give me about WIFI related to downloading , it would be great. Thanks. Also, I just contacted Airtel a while earlier. They said, that the WIFI MODEM is not available till September 1st week in the New Delhi area. That gives me another problem, I need WIFI and they do not have the modem. But as I am given to understand, we can use our own WIFI modem with the Airtel connection right? But they do not give any support to a third-party modem. Can you please suggest to me whether I should wait for Airtel to get their modems or buy a separate WIFI modem and get the Airtel connection done on it? And which modem if I should get one? |

Rep Power: 1 | Well lets take the doubts 1 by 1....... If you use Wi-FI modem with 1 Mbps speed and Start the download on 1 laptop and start surfing on the other laptop- YES THE SPEED WILL BE AFFECTED!! Wi-Fi will just distribute the bandwidth to other laptops......if you simultaneously surf internet on 2 laptops/computers speed will be shared! If this doubt is cleared I will move on to the 2nd one |

Okay, but by what degree, like supposing I have a 700 mb download going on LAPTOP 1, and I'm checking my email,(lol) on Laptop 2, what will be the speed diffrentiation on LAPTOP 1 with the default being 120 kbps download speed. After this, you can move on the additional queries . Thanks .

Otherwise the difference in speed would be total bandwidth - bandwidth used to view mails= Bandwidth used in downloads! ------------ Yes you can buy a wi-fi router separately and use it with Airtel! Airtel generally dont provide support if you dnt buy the router from them but most people do not require any support to configure WI-FI. Its fairly simple and can be done by any1 with bit knowledge about computers!

These softwares are not basically download accelarators. What they basically do is try to utilize maximum bandwidth to download fast!! In that case it can affect your browsing speed when the Download is going on!! you can google for "internet download manager" ---------- Quote:
I have a netgear router and also a ADSL+Router (beetel) which was given by Airtel. I use 1 at home and other is used at shop! I personally found Beetel easy to configure. Netgear is heavy on features and thus may seem a bit difficult to configure!! "buffalo" and "dlink" are also good brands!

Rep Power: 1 | I just got off the phone with Airtel, they're like the Beetel Wireless Router is not available till October 1st Week now. That is really sad, and I went to my computer guy in Nehru Place and he said that he doesn't suggest me buying a Separate Wireless Router and connecting it with Airtel since, the support system isn't great and Airtel doesn't help if you have a problem since you have a separate router. What a difficult position, |

Rep Power: 2 | I am located in Bangalore and quite happily use a Linksys wireless router along with my airtel broadband connection. The wireless setup is painless and most people can have it up and running in about 10 minutes. PM me if you need help in setting up the router - it's fairly simple and if required, I can walk you through it either over chat or a phone maybe... As regards a download manager, I use Free Download Manager and it's pretty good and also, like it says, free... Just Google Free Download Manager and download it and you are ready to go... Cheers |

It is not necessary that you buy a wi-fi router from Airtel only. Buy any from a reputed company such as Linksys or Netgear. It is true that Airtel will not support it but that is what this forum is all about. We are here to help.
