Smile Airtel Broadband connection in Bangalore

    Hi,

I have a Airtel Broadband with 2MBPS Speed. As of now it is connected directly to my 24 Port D-Link Switch over LAN, DHCP Enabled for users in Lan to access the Internet.

Client Machines are working fine by giving individual IP's like 192.168.0.2 or X

Airtel Supplied this connection with Beetel Modem / Router - 450 BX1 (Adsl2 + CPE)

Recenting I have created an account in OpenDNS to block access to certain websties, pishing etc.. I tried to configure my Beetel modem / router to change the DNS Servers Ip's in my Router by logging in to Webwizard 192.168.0.1 , I dint a place to edit it.

I have configured individual computers / Laptops by changing DNS servers in TCP/IP under Network Settings, but users are often removing these settings to gain access to Blocked content.

Hence I need to know is it possible to configure OpenDNS DNS Server IP to my Exiting Beetel Modem / Router or if I have to buy a new Router which one should I buy. I need a Router with Wirelss connectivity option.

    Thanks,
    Murugesh.S

You may want to look into modem settings. type 192.168.1.1 in the browser and login to access modem settings. the default login is
    username: admin
    password: password
change the settings or modify as per your need...save and reboot modem.
you can even change the modem password to prevent anyone from accessing the modem settings.

well unfortunately this router doesnt support that.. but setting your router to opendns will be of no use , as you get to select other dns servers in windows xp's network settings.. so users would eventually change them.. take alook at this How to block certain websites

    Default Blocking Websites

    Hi,

Thanks for the reply, earlier I use to block the websites by entering details in hosts file... but they dont block them completely.. for an example if you want to block yahoo.com or yahoo emails we will enter it as

    127.0.0.1 www yahoo com
    127.0.0.1 *.yahoo.com
    127.0.0.1 yahoo.com

Even after entering the above details in HOSTS file yahoo mails gets open where as the page redirects to in.yahoo.com etc.. and to block many websites we need add big list in Hosts file.

So only I am looking for some good ADSL Modem + Router with Wireless to configure my Airtel DSL..

    Regards,
    Murugesh.S

I have beetel 450BXI [ADSL2+Router]Wireless. I have the option of configuring DNS but I've never tried chnaging it....but i'm sure that the options are there. if this is the same modem you have then you may have an old firmware version. Try updating it. For me the airtel technician came and updated it via pendrive.

    Murugesh,

As one of the posts points out, it would be fairly easy for someone to change the dns settings in their own system to bypass your openDNS settings in the router.

There are two ways of blocking this. In the first place, you don't even need to fiddle with the DNS settings in the router. You can disallow changing the DNS settings in Group Policy. For this to be effective, you have to have separate Admin and user logins to the systems. Once you have done that, login as the Admin and setup the network card properties with your static IP, openDNS etc. Now go to Start > Run > gpedit.msc and go to Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Network > DNS Client and enable the DNS servers template and specify the open DNS servers in a space delimited way, i.e. enter 208.67.222.222 208.67.220.220 in the space for IPs. Once you have done that, logout and reboot. Now the user will not be able to change the DNS server entries and even if he does these will be overriden by the Group Policy. This is simple to do if your systems are on a domain and you are running AD, else you will have to make this change on all the machines individually.

The second way is hardware based and would require you to purchase an inexpensive router or if you have a spare machine available use that as the router (it would need to have two NICs). Set up ACLs on the router to block all the sites that you want - you could even to do this on a per IP or IP range and is administratively easier to handle - however this requires some expertise in ACL list creation.

If yours is a small organisation then the Group Policy is your best bet...

    Hope this helps

    Cheers
