The total bandwidth allocated to you is 384k/1mbps - in otherwords that is the total bandwidth that you can use. If you are only downloading then the entire pipe is used and you will get higher speeds - similar if you are only uploading. When you are on a simultaneous upload/download scenario, the total bandwidth will be shared between the upload/download giving you lower speeds on both...

I would have to disagree on it!!

Even I have the same Explorer 1099 plan...So the day speed is 384 Kbps i.e. 48 KBps.....

I am downloading a torrent file using utorrent and have set the DL and UL speeds as unlimited! and I am getting around 45 KBps DL speed and around 40 KBps UL speed. That means DL+UL= 85 KBps which is not possible if the total allocated speed is just 384 Kbps.

I had earlier also read somewhere that DL speeds are not affect by UL speeds but after reading your posts I did a test again to check it!

I set the Upload speeds from Unlimited to 40,30,20,10 and even 5 KBps but in all cases the DL speed wasnt affected and it remained at 45 KBps and when I again set it to unlimited still I am getting the same speed and the total DL+UL speed= 80-85 KBps!!

=====

Rather setting too low UL speeds can affect your DL speeds in a negative way!

=====

EDIT-

So Night time has started and now the speed is 1 Mbps.....I did the test again and noticed that If I keep the UL speed as unlimited it goes around to 60 KB and the DL speed is around 70 KB but if I restrict the UL speed to 25 KBps then the DL speed shoots upto around 115 KBps!! So from the tests done till now I can say that UL speed have the effect on DL speed during night times but not during day times!!!!!!! Now thats strange!

I have never tried comparing the DL speed with simultaneous upload on a file hosting service so cant say abt that!!

BTW what speed you get before uploading and during uploading?? And you DL the file using torrents or some premium account or something?

Even during the daytime, if you see your DL/UL on any kind of network bandwidth monitor, you will see that your total DL+UL will not be over 384 kbps. You will see bursts of upto 600-700 kbps and corresponding down times where the speed will be 5-10 kbps - in other words the overall average will be 384 kbps or thereabout. This is due to the fact that you are using torrents to measure your speeds and the speeds reported by your torrent client is in blocks of 1 second or more.
To test properly start a download from a fast site that is able to give you a steady stream of data - lets say Microsoft. Keep the download going and now start a upload to lets say rapidshare - you will see an immediate drop in your download speed.

Well as I quite Elaborately mentioned in my previous post.....when testing using torrents I Ignored the "bursts" which you can get in between and only took the avg speed in consideration. And I can surely say that at any point of time it wasnt less than atleast 70 KBps!!

+1 for that!

I am on the same plan as you are , In the day I get around 40 KBps upload speed and at night it touches 135 KBps

but these are upload speeds on torrents not on Direct Download websites like reapidshare and megaupload , I haven't seen my download speed get effected because of uploading files
