    Hi All,

Modem or Router ? Which one is best for 512 kbps Airtel connection ?

Please suggest for performance, cost is secondary.

A modem and router are two different things and you cannot substitute one for the other. There are modems with inbuilt routers.

A modem is a necessity for your connection and a router would facilitate in connecting multiple computers either wired or if you have a wifi router then wirelessly but you would also need wireless LAN cards in your computers if you want a wireless connection.

usually Airtel supplies an ADSL modem or a
    3-in1 Wireless ( adslmodem+router+WIFI)
on a NON refundable deposit of Rs 1000/=
    and Rs 1500/= respectively.
    No Monthly rent charged.
Modem replaced/updated with later models, in case of complaints.
Usually Beetel 110BX1( almost same as UT300r2U of BSNL)
or Beetel 450TC1 ( same as Utstar WA3002-G1)

If you have a Laptop, you may like to use it in the house
anywhere ( to BB without any wires )
    So choice is yours.
Buy an adsl modem for Rs 1300 onwards
and a wifi router for about Rs 1500 onwards,
or buy a 3-in 1 for about Rs 3000/= and above.

For ref: Bsnl supplied modems Cost Rs 1000 and Rs 1600 + taxes

Enter in SEARCH ( google) box in this page top :
    Buffalo modem
    ( recommended )

Bsnl modems for Rs 1000/+ taxes appear a better
    option.
    wILL work with all Isps.

    Thanks for the reply.

I have choosen modem (beetel) and got the Airtel connection (@Blr).

So far everything is good. Including speed.

PS: Paid 3 months rent in advance so the installation charges are waived off.
