The Internet speed is not a constant.
varies due to line conditions/servers/
contention ratio etc.
Check your speed here. different times
Each test will use about 2.6 MB data
Airtel
Give results here. No picture needed.
Speed upto 2 Mbps 8 times ( *1MB file in 4 seconds) faster
than speed upto 256Kbps. ( *1 MB file in 30 seconds )
*conditions apply!
Mention your modem/model make.
If you are in wifi mode slight drop also possible.
reported speed 210Kbps is acceptable..
Test on speed.airtelbroadband.in
At 9:45 am [15 nov 09]
Download:215kbps
Upload:161kbps
Previously at 8:00am [15 nov 09]
Download:212kbps
Upload:222kbps
Tests on SpeedTest.net
These Give Better Results than Airtel's own test!!
[Except when I selected the Delhi Server]
Chennai Server:
Download:274kbps
Upload:242kbps
Delhi:
Download:210kbps
Upload:247kbps
Using Beetel - 220BX Modem
Airtel 799 Unlimited (256kbps) plan
Am NOT on WiFi. Using Ethernet Cable to connect to Modem.
Speed cannot be due to line problem, I was happily getting 2mbps until a few days ago.
Device Info:
Board ID: 96338L-2M-8M
Software Version: 3.12L.01.A2pB023k.d20k_rc2
Bootloader (CFE) Version: 1.0.37-4.3
P.S. am having problems with port forwarding in uTorrent. Will post that in another thread.
Thanks for the help.

kbps kBps trap!!
You are actually getting better speeds than me.
The downloading speed you are talking about is in Kilo BYTES per second, that is what all download managers show.
For that I get about 26kBps, nothing more.
What I and the ISP's tell you as speed is the kilo BITS per second.
[To convert Bytes per second into Bits per sec Multiply by 8,
for example ur 40kBps is = 40*8 = 320kbps!!!]
It depends on your area. if you are in an urban area you get the max
I am calling Airtel taday.
I live near Electronic City in Bangalore. I live in a Urban of Urban areas.
Nearly every house on this road has a broadband connection, multiple telephone lines, so much so that BSNL has run out of telephone lines on my street!! [You cannot apply for BSNL connection here!!, although I have a connection, if Airtel troubles me too much would switch to BSNL ]
Hyderabad
Airtel plans:
128 kbps ----- 499 + taxes
256 kbps ----- 799 + taxes
512kbps ----- 1099 + taxes
----------------------------------------
Youtele is best
192 Kbps ----- 450 + taxes
384 kbps ----- 650 + taxes
512 kbps ----- 775 + taxes
-------------------------------------
next Beamtele is best
128kbps ----- 400.00 Service Tax inclusive for all packages
256kbps ----- 600.00 "
512kbps ----- 850.00 "
I have recently switched over to unlimited 256 plan ( rs 649 only for combo plan ) from previous 128.
The airtel speed test download results are between 200 to 235.Upload is the worst since it is between 60 to 110 only.Airtel asked me to use speed.west.airtel test which gives reults more than 300 at any time.
both tests are from airtel, however in reality found only 40 to 50 % extra speed than 128.
on complaints, the poor technicians visit and do cabling here and thereand goes away.
any solution ?
