Unhappy Airtel throttling speeds to download / video streaming sites ??

    Hello,
I have an airtel broadband connection with the Turbo 1299 plan (Day: 512 kbps / nights 1 mbps). I find it very strange that the following sites are slow most of the time. youtube, rapidshare, megavideo, megaupload, etc.

Basically sites that stream videos and offer downloads are slow. I get a download spead of maybe 20 kilobytes/sec. However with torrents etc I get a speed of around 64 kilobytes/sec or 120 kilobytes/sec at night. I had a Tata Indicom internet connection and always used to get around 50 - 60 Kb/sec for the above mentioned sites.

I am really comtemplating going back to Tata Indicomm although it is more costly.

Anybody else notice this behaviour ? Thanks....

    youtube, rapidshare, megavideo, megaupload, etc.

A look at the sites mentioned and I guess I know what the issue is.

you download as a free user from RS, MU, MV etc.....right??

If yes then it is those sites who block the speed and not airtel.

I have used RS extensively with and without premium account. With the premium account I always have got the max speed possible and no issues at all. And as a free user you get terrible speeds.

About youtube- It is also fine. There maybe be some issues sometimes but that too is very rare. Even then I get the max speed when I download the video via IDM instead of watching it on the site itself!!

Use proxy & encrypt your url even if airtel are throttling speeds they can do nothing.

    Luck by chance!!

RS and such sites work on the principle that if there servers are getting less traffic they give extra DL speed otherwise you get less speed. There is a chance that RS was giving reasonable speed say 2-3 months back when you had Indicom and its the fact now that RS has gone pathetic for free users from past sometime.

And slow speed for free users is a global phenomena. Every user experience this.

Having said that you can clear your doubts if you try again with Indicom maybe if your friend has got it. But I would say if you get good speed on torrents and other sites it would be safe to assume that Airtel is not capping speeds!

What I meant was downloading as "Free" user from sites like rapidshare etc instead of buying a premium account.

Youtube is not premium. If it is about premium than you can search the net for premium accounts. They are available for free.

I know that youtube is not premium. If you had read my earlier post carefully I have written that I used IDM to download from youtube rather than streaming on website and that way I get maximum speed.

And about premium accounts on net- You can search them. There are dumps available but 99% of time either the pass has been changed or the limit has been exhausted!! So practically its no use.

I face the same issue consistently on youtube with 1MB connection.I do not like the idea of downloading every video in order to view it.

its better to call the technicians and request them to check the line speed.

Downloading youtube videos and then watching is a waste of time, upgrade ur speed to 2Mbps unlimited, it's good for playing 480p videos! For streaming 720p videos, u require minimum of 10Mbps unlimited connection, which is impossible to get it in India! Go for 2Mbps or more speed and always go for unlimited connection..

do 1 simple thing..download something from MS site and check if you are getting the desired speed as per your plan.

Default I think Airtel is throttling YouTube

I have the same plan (512 day /1024 night) and i get about 350kbps on youtube . This is definitely something i wanted to post months ago, but I though I was the only one with this issue. Torrents and downloads work at about 512kbps.

my youtube speed significantly improves (3 to 5 times) when i start "speed on demand" service by airtel. if a slow youtube server was the cause of slow youtube speeds, then "speed on demand" wouldn't have such a major effect. This makes me believe that youtube is fine and its airtel thats slowing it down.

i use a free windows widget called "Network Meter" to check speeds. Alternatively a software called "DU meter" can also be used. Plz post your observations.

    Default airtel cutting speed

    hi,
I have got Airtel 799 plan but while downloading videos from youtube, dailymotion the speed which intially comes aroung 80kbps reduces to 15 kbps after 5~8 min. So, is Airtel really cutting speed ???
