Probe on into complaint against mobile operator

TAMBARAM: Following a court direction, the Chennai Suburban Police have registered a case and are investigating a complaint from an advocate relating to alleged cheating by a leading mobile phone operator.

Infant Dinesh (26), an advocate from Nerkundram, submitted a complaint before the Judicial Magistrate, Tambaram, that he was charged Rs.99 for a service he did not avail. On the Magistrate's direction, the police registered a case under Sections 120, 406 and 420 of the Indian Penal Code.

The advocate had secured a GPRS zero rental plan connection from the mobile phone operator, Airtel, in August last year. While browsing, he is reported to have clicked an advertisement and was immediately charged Rs.99 as charges for downloading a game.

The petitioner called up Airtel staff and said he had not downloaded it. As his connection was post-paid, he refused to pay the additional amount included in the bill for value added services, following which his connection was terminated.

According to him, the act of the company in charging Rs.99 was a violation of rules laid down by Telecom Regulatory Authority of India. In an official statement,

Airtel said the customer was using a postpaid connection via which premium content was downloaded using Airtel Live WAP amounting to Rs 99. Airtel Live provides free usage on the Airtel live platform, and charges only for the content (themes, animations, games, wallpapers etc.) as per download. The download in this case was from a third party site, Airtel said.

Folks, while we applaud Mr.Infant Dinesh for his bold initiative, my heart goes out to the rural folks AND other lesser mortals who otherwise won’t have any clue to the “gullible” marketing techniques of Private operators like Airtel. Hence the police are taking it seriously and are looking at more evidence.

Write in brief a) Your basic details-Account or phone no, b) Your complaint c)Response from Airtel d) Quantify the tangible losses e) What are the intangible losses – Like losing connection, time waste, mental torture etc.,, if possible quantify that as well.

I think their should be also some people doing same thing with Reliance, as they cheat their customers more than anyone.

BTW i have been using Airtel Broadband, did not fell nytime that i have been cheated or going to be cheated in future.

I have been using Airtel Broadband for the past 4 years. I had billing issue once ( excess bill of 1000) and it was refunded to me. No issues after that.
I would say there are many pathetic and worst Mobile and Broadband providers that should be banned / probed. In individual cases likes yours, pls followup with Airtel and I guess based on the opinions from Airtel users they have best customer care and response time.

If your issue is Mobile , please post your issue some in the mobile forum not in the broadband forum.

Airtel Broadband is the best so far in this country in terms of reliability and customer care.

How come non-citizens are not eligible? This message is discriminatory. It should be open to all residents and not just citizens.

Excess Data Charges without Supporting Documents during International Roaming
I am a customer with Airtel Karnataka for the past 3 years+ and have been regular and prompt payer of bills. My Mobile Number is 9972043211.
I traveled to Japan on 27th November 2009 and reached on 28th November 2009. I returned to India on 12th December 2009. THERE IS OVER RS.5375/- AND RS.9700/- CHARGED FOR DATA, WHEN I HAD NOT USED DATA TRANSFER / DATA CONNECTION.
Again, I traveled on 19th December 2009 late evening and reached Japan on 20th December 2009. I returned to India on 23rd December 2009. I received an SMS alert on 20th December tell me my outstanding as over 25000/- On 21st December 2009 afternoon I received another alert stating my outstanding as Rs.36000/- Within a span of 1 day without using data connection, I do not know how Rs.11000/- can be the increase.
I had disputed these data charges and till date without resolution, i keep getting calls from Airtel at all times and every time i need to explain the same story to their CSRs. Meanwhile, I kept Paying the Regular Plan, Call and SMS charges.
On 17th March 2010, my outgoing calls and SMs were barred even though I had paid all the phone charges except for the above disputed amount asking them to provide breakup of the sites that I am said to have visited. Till date they did not provide me the breakup, but had barred my Outgoing facility.
I hope at least now they will resolve, failing which need to highlight this kind of money making in press and take up legally.
NOW AIRTEL IS SENDING GOONDAS AND ROWDIES TO COLLECT MONEY WHO KEEP ABUSING AND THREATENING US INCLUDING MY AGED MOTHER WHEN I AM NOT AROUND. THESE GOONDAS ARE THREATENING TO KILL MY MOTHER AND BURY HER APART FROM KILLING MY OTHER FAMILY MEMBERS.
BESIDES, AIRTEL HAS BEEN CALLLING AND HARASSING SOME OF THE PERSONS FOR PAYMENT OR INFORMATION, WHOSE NUMBERS APPEARED ON MY ITEMIZED CALL STATEMENT IN THE PAST.
THERE NODAL OFFICER DISHES OUT STANDARD ANSWERS.
INSTEAD OF BEING LAWFUL, AIRTEL IS RESORTING TO CHEAP AND SHAMELESS TACTICS OF SENDING MESSAGES TO ALL THE NUMBER, WHOM I MIGHT HAVE CALLED AT SOME TIME DURING THOSE 3 YEARS.

1. Email airtelpresence@airtel.in as soon as possible with all the details that you have mentioned in this post.
2. Lodge a Police Complaint for harassment.

airtel is very quick and affordable broadband service provide. but some people do not follow that rules.
