Default Airtel is doubling speed. Beware conditions apply

On their website Airtel says all customers will get Double speeds accross India. Below 512 Kbps will get 512 Kbps and 512 Kbps and 1Mbps will get 1 Mbps and 2 Mbps respectively. So i thought of asking the customer care about the issue and wrote a email regarding the issue. I am using the old 1099 plan and i get 512Kbps speed without any limit of transfer.

The link for News on airtel website is

Airtel breaks the speed barrier -Doubles speed for Broadband customers at no extra cost-

I got reply from customer care today afternoon explaining the whole issue. They said it will not be done automatically and customer will need to shift to new plans to get the benefit. I asked about Swift 1099 plan for example which was previously giving 512 Kbps and its upgraded to 1 Mbps speed with Fair Usage Policy (FUP) of 15Gb and after that 256Kbps. and above all after limit is exhausted Airtel is not giving even 512 Kbps. so whats the use of double speed when you cant download more. 15Gb is nothing when you have
1Mbps. my friend on MTNL is already getting 1 Mbps for 512 Kbps plan only for 699 and that too unlimited. ( he has downloaded more than 20gb and still 15 days to go this month).

When this AIrtel people will stop cheating their customers.

Let us assume you DONT DOWNLOAD any pirated content, 15GB is more than sufficient. If you do, then it ain't good and why will airtel want to encourage piracy by giving you a 100GB FUP. I hope you get the point behind the limits and the offer instead of complaining...

So, if you download a lot of pirated games and movies, you are the one cheating and not your ISP, so the least we can do is not complain...

What I do with my connection should not bother them as long as I'm paying the bills properly!

15GB FUP is ridiculous and 256kbps speeds are even more so

And it isn't necessary that every game i download has to be pirated

Steam, for example lets you download games after paying them. And most of these are large ones > 6 GB. So 15gb is not enough even for legit stuff.

Not trying to sound rude, but can't help commenting that this is the most ridiculous justification of FUP that I'v ever read.

15 GB is a bad joke...

Besides lets not forget that you have to account for upload also. So the actual limit for download is even lower...

In america and European countries they dont have any FUP and their, and their speeds are far more higher then others their ISP's dont ask them what they are downloading. And i think they download far more than us in India.
Then who is Airtel to teach us about Piracy. And Live TV is a Paid subscription and if you always watch TV through your connection i dont think 15Gb is a very big limit.

We are talking here about Airtel making fool out of their customers. Yesterday my friend was applying for Airtel connection and Executive said about taking 1099 plan with 1Mbps Unlimited plan. So whats unlimited plan and when my friend called me to enquire then also that executive was insisting that its a unlimited plan and new plans have come, when i asked about FUP then only he said their is data limit. So why to fool customers why MTNL is giving huge limits as compared to Airtel, are they not concerned about piracy. what when old customers didnt have FUP they download day and night then where was Airtel talking about piracy. Its upto government who should take pain. Are you some Movie producer, i thought as you take stand against piracy. How many audio cds have you purchased till today and how many Hindia and english movies you have purchased. and dont say you dont watch movies and listen to songs even.

Your post tells that you are against fup,but what can be done?

All it depends on airtel! What's the concern about the us and europe! It's India!
Here everything about internet is controlled by our isp provider!
So airtel can only do something!

Its not all about FUP. Just wanted that Airtel Should not fools out of customers. And these days 15Gb on 1Mbps is nothing just like others have said. I use Video Chat a Lot on skype and download videos from Youtube apart from other things and 15Gb seems small and above all Airtel has withdrawn old plans which doesnt have such small Data limits. They should clearly say what they are selling. I had a long argument with airtel when I came accross the double speed bonanza

FUP or No FUP I am using airtel as I find it the best comparing to others. ( I have the old plan with around 80gb FUP).

If people feel MTNL is providing better services they should switch to it. Though airtel should clearly mention about the FUP to customers.

If I was you I wouldnt have worried so much about FUP if I had a good alternative MTNL in this case as you are saying its better.

I'm having the same plan. They told me that they will downgrade the speed to 512Kbps after the initial 25GB.
