    Question What ISP should I go for? (Leaving Airtel)

    I'm leaving Airtel, had it for 4+ years and I'm sick of the slow speed. I pay for 256 or somethin, and I get 30kbps. What ISP should I go for, I hear Reliance is bad, and BSNL isn't in my area.

    Edit: BTW, what speeds do you people get from Airtel? When they say 256 do you actually get that speed?

    Download any file from Microsoft and report the speed here. You may try BSNL EvDO. It has a advertised speed of 3.1 Mbps and get a minimum of 1 Mbps. Get a demo at your place.

    30 kbps is enough for 256 kbps, what more do you expect????

    when you say 30 Kbps are you talking about Download speed? I just want to make sure about that.

    256 Kbps= 32 KBps

    What they mention (256) is Kilobits per second and what you see (30) is KiloBytes per second.

    I am guessing you must be knowing about it since you are using it for 4+ years but still incase if you dont know-

    You will always get the download speed 1/8th of the speed mentioned by ISP in each case. If you are getting around that its completely fine.

    EVDO guys in bangalore say NO for a demo, thats why too risky to try for me.

    I have used airtel for long time now, pretty happy, i get speeds that are promised.
    For a 256kbps conn -> 28kBps on torrents -> 30kBps on direct downloads
    For a 512 kBps conn -> 56KBps on torrents -> 58 odd on direct downloads
    For 1MBps conn -> 108-110 KBps on torrents -> not tried direct downloads

    But, I got double speed while downloading off steam

    lol I didn't know there was a difference between kBps and KBps. Thanks for explaining it In the US I paid 20 dollars (rs.900) for my internet and I got around 800 KBps, wish it was that cheap here.

    Would be most grateful if you can advise what is "downloading off steam". I always believe in the fact that one can learn something new everyday. Thanks.
