Whenever you send send a picture or a video file to a friend or talk/video chat, you use UPLOAD bandwidth. In my case, I had Security Camera system installed at my house which I view remotely. In this case too, upload bandwidth is the only thing that comes into question.
The sad thing is that NONE of the ISPs mention anything about the upload speed on their various plans. The only provider that clearly mentions upload speed on their website is Tata Indicom which is a Wimax provider and not your regular DSL or cable internet provider. Take a look here h t t p://w w w .tataindicombroadband.in/tariffs.html enter your city or the nearest city and you will see what I am talking about.
I recently had this issue with Airtel. I was on a Unlimited999 plan. I was getting 512 kbps download and 384 upload. Airtel launched some new plans this June 2010 and one plan called Speed 599 had 1 mbps download speed. I assumed that these are new plans with better download speed and obviously upload speed can't be any worse and the contrary can improve. Well, I was wrong. Even though the download speed increased, the upload speed went from 384 kbps to 128 kbps which simply made viewing the cameras on internet virtually useless. It became painfully slow to send few full resolution pics or a small video.
After bunch of phone calls to Customer Service, most of them had no idea what I am talking about. Finally, I had to take a gamble and upgrade my plan to another Browser 799 plan in the hope that this will give some boost in upload speed. It has been changed only a few days ago and now I am getting better speed. I am not sure if I am back to 384 kbps upload or not but I am going to test it more and report back here.
Getting decent upload speed is just too difficult at the moment. We should talk about it more and email/call the ISPs more in the hope that someday they will listen and advertise their upload speeds also, so that a consumer can choose the plan that best suits their needs.
