Default Airtel vs Bsnl - pathetic ping times with airtel ?

I have been using BSNL Home 500 and I just took an Airtel 599 connection (1mbps/4gb limit).

Ping times with airtel are ABSOLUTELY AWFUL.

    with airtel:
average ping time to any west coast US server - 400-440ms
    EU servers - 300-340ms

    with BSNL:
    US - 290-320ms
    EU - 200-220ms

Airtel has no night time unlimited, and there's a FUP (dl speed goes down the drain after a certain limit)

So basically, by paying more money, I'm getting a worse connection ?
Am I missing something here ?

Test whether they are implementing FUP on your connection. If you do not download much, most probably they might spare you.

And regarding the ping rates - I find this particular ISP to be much better than BSNL. After all, BSNL purchases hefty bandwidth from Airtel and Reliance.

Also please do check for the mode of connectivity of your ADSL connection. Interleaved connectivity will increase the ping rates by many times. It must be fastpath to enjoy a lag-free connection.

Nah latency has nothing to do with FUP or plan bandwidth. ping times are the same on every connection for a particular ISP.

    basically :

Airtel - terrible routing, terrible/high latencies and ping times

BSNL - slightly better (100-150ms better on any international server)

I really dont know what has happened to airtel ... at one time i used to get better pings than any other provider around ... its since they started the FUP they started screwing up ...

Yup, I play world of warcraft ( a popular online game ) and the best ping times I've got all around India is from BSNL. In Kolkata, where I stay, the ping times are around 450-500 ms. In Patna, BSNL its around 310-320ms consistent. However, in Delhi I got around 350-400ms from Airtel.
Overall Airtel's latency is better in Delhi than Kolkata. I've always felt from my experience that BSNL is very good in infrastructure. The only problem is service.
Now I have two connection in Kolkata, BSNL just for online play. In case it goes down (which is like atleast 4-5 times a year for a few days ) I switch to airtel which other computers also use.

i am using bsnl 4 mbps in kolkata . but getting below 1.5 mbps all the time except 6 am to 10 am. download speed is less than 50 KBps max time. u complain 100 times but no result. this is bsnl . cable broadband of 750 kbps has better surfing speed than bsnl 4 mbps(leave alone 2 mbps). i did a bad judgement buying a adsl dlink modem router. if not then atleast wud try local cable broadband. i chek wishnet 768 kbps next door which has better surfing speed than bsnl 4 mbps . now even download speed is better in wishnet which give almost constant 80 kbps for 768 kbps bandwidth.

Cable broadbrand is always a better option.
