You wont see any difference in speed by using a data cable as the actuall speed wont change with it. Airtel gprs without edge is genrally very slow and even with edge support you wont get speeds any better then 100kbps.

EDGE is not supported all over India so you will have to check with airtel if edge is supported in your area or not.
EDGE is a gprs dependent technology which makes gprs data transfer faster but the maximum you will get from gprs edge enabled connection is 100kbps as Airtel caps every connection at 100kbps at thier end.

If you are a wireless fanatic .. Just wait for the new Nokia wimax enabled phone which is due to be launched next year January-feb which will give you broadband speeds wirelessly.

Instead of trying with another data cable, Try it with a Nokia N7 Series (from ur friends) it may be twice the speed of ur existing speed.
