interesting, if the server is indeed in singapore latencies are US level of terribleness.

As you can see; lot of jitter, packet loss and fluctuating latency.

Airtel isn't really that bad though(compared to bsnl), typically latencies fluctuate a lot less than bsnl, there is very little packet loss, lot less outages and routing is generally fixed and better.
However typically "good" latencies are on average always 40-60ms higher than BSNL.

With BSNL there's always the problem of frequent outages, erratic and unpredictable packet loss every other week, pretty awful jitter and constantly changing routing which is usually awful.
With bsnl "good" latencies are quite low, but then again the "good" phases of internet aren't always there since every few days you'll experience utter garbage. For example for the last 3-4 weeks routing to the US and EU on bsnl has been simply awful.

There is no one to complain to and there aren't any responses. there's no tier 1/2/3 technical support like in other countries sadly. It's kinda funny that time warner outsources broadband tech support to India but we Indians have an utter joke of a tech support for our own broadband.

The thing is that very very few people do anything on the internet that even require decent internet or any degree of reliability.

I'm pretty sure 95% of the internet subs in India just use the internet for very casual email checking and some facebook.

Things like online trading (stocks), banking, auctioning, streaming video conferences/interviews, skype v/a chat, streaming radio/video, "working from home" using remote desktop/server type services (stuff like vnc server), secure connections to do similar stuff so on and so forth - are just not there in India.

And online gaming is a joke. Gaming in general in India is frowned upon and not considered "cool" amongst the youth. No one games, so a large chunk of demand is gone. Consider this, have you ever heard of starcraft 2 amongst indian gamers ?

We're probably more than 20 years behind other developing countries like china and ones in south east asia (thailand/malaysia).

There is little or no growth in these sectors so demand is low. Since no one needs high quality internet or good bandwidth, the situation remains the same.

And with the way the indian IT industry works, the government feels lowering prices won't really improve anything.

Also, DSL is a discarded technology and sadly such seem to find a foothold in 3rd world countries like ours (much like DTH home tv).

Cable internet might improve things, but it just won't happen.

My recommendation is to accept all this and just take 2 internet connections - BSNL home 500 for nightime use (downloads/updates etc scheduled them since night time usage is unlimited) and then juggle between bsnl and either airtel or reliance during the day.

I use bsnl home 1000 (a variant of home 500 not available anymore) and an airtel 600 rupees plan.

If u go to speed test.net and ping asian servers u will see high ping to singapore and other Asian servers.Online gaming is not a joke there are thousands of indains who play cod4,Counter strike. But airtel sure is joke ISP.

although both are superb games, they are very old.
My point wasn't that there aren't any gamers in India at all, but that it's a very very very very small minority.
Additionally because of piracy and the lack of interest in general there are very few game servers based in India.

I have CoD4 on my PC but there's around 1-2 servers in India that aren't even online most of the time.

Playing a competitive fps with 300+ latency is mostly an exercise in frustration. Especially given that most good servers are not in India.

Commonly popular Multiplayer franchises and MMOs like SC2, WoW, new CoD games don't even see releases in India. Heck even single player AAA titles are rarely released in India anywhere near the timeline of any other country.

You won't even find a strong league of legends/DoTA or HoN community here since servers in the EU/US are 300/450+ ms latency.

Think about it how many meaningful international servers for *anything* are based in India ?
And we think ourselves to be an IT superpower ... lols.

If you compare other BRIC (brazil/china/russia/india) or even south east asian countries they are aeons ahead in terms of internet reach/servers, usage, and obviously gaming.

There's a dedicated server for Starcraft 2 and World of Warcraft in brazil, China but do you think there will *ever* be one for India ? I vouch for the "never" answer.

    Similarly for other games too.

Anyway I'm probably derailing the thread with whining about our crappy internet infrastructure.

My point was Airtel does suck but BSNL sucks even more. The only downside with Airtel is it's really expensive. Kolkata doesn't really have many other alternatives since there is no MTNL and reliance doesn't reach most areas.

If I were you I would try getting a bsnl connection (at least home 500) or try for reliance BB. Also definitely apply the leatrix latency fix to lower pings, and if you have the money to spare invest in a good tunneling service.

    update to your server ping:
still lossy on bsnl (packet loss every 10-15 seconds) latency jittery around ~100ms.
Airtel pings to that server are shitty as you can see.

    leatrix latency fix

what is that?Does it really work?Thing is that this problem is related to kolkata airtel users only.I have friends from delhi, chennai playing games uisng airtel in that same server.there ping is normal. My ping was normal since i took airtel. It is for the past 1 month my ping is fucked. And all my friends from kolkata facing same issue.

I use bsnl home 1000 (a variant of home 500 not available anymore) and an airtel 600 rupees plan.
yes maximum users r non pro in internet. very few scheme is there in affordable price for pro who use net for share trading, dedicated stock market software , net banking etc. so broadband in india is in worst kind of service

The lack of enthusiasm for gaming in India cannot be blamed just on the crappy Net infrastructure and high pings, just look at the aussies, they always get 300+ ping in games, let it be WoW, Dota, HoN, they are generally at a slight disadvantage because of their location in the southern hemisphere..

That doesnt really stop them from competing and gaming is a very popular activity in Aus im sure.
