Default Airtel Broadband throttling speeds of their users

Airtel Broadband throttling speeds of their users?
We now have some idea on why some users are noticing falling speeds on Airtel Broadband. The company is expanding their user base at such a speed that their backend is unable to meet up with the growing demand.
The company is offering free installation in the new areas they are expanding their operations at and had recently announced double speeds at night. All of these are taking its toll on their DSLAMs.
One user on the India Broadband Forum had this to report through a statement made by the service engineer who visited his house:
    a. Airtel’s free installation offer has completely choked their dslams (?)
    b. new cables are being laid, to keep up with demand.
    c. the double speed offer at night worsens things.
    d. “actually” there’s a lot of bandwidth available.
    e. Airtel implements throttling. i.e. if you’re a big downloader, you’ll be cut down to size by being given less speeds. (By a policy, that monitors entire account categories/groups.)
These problems should be sorted out fast as the company is working on upgrading the capacity of their DSALMs.

Default Off Topic; Sorry about this =|

    Admin,

Could you tell me about the double speed(bandwidth) offer? I went to the link that you posted but im not sure where to go from there.
Recently im been getting 512 bandwidth, torrents goin at a stable 60KB/s since i download from private trackers. However this happens randomly not specific to night.
I called up Airtel and they told me that they were checking the ports as they will be offering new plans in January.
I dont belive that BSNL will offer 2MB for its users for cheap. If it is below R.S 2000 im in for that package and bye bye airtel.

So please could you P.M me about how to double my bandwidth.
    Thank you.

All the ISPs have plenty of bandwidth at their disposal and they take us for a ride milking us till whenever they can. Now they will be forced to release some of that bandwidth to us because of BSNL/MTNL's 2 mbps plans. Still they must have made lots and lots of money by now.

    Indian ISP's = Bandwidth hoarders/ blackmarketeers.

    NeoEn
BSNL/MTNL say they will upgrade all their current 256 kbps users to 2 mbps at no extra cost. That means plans starting from Rs. 150 to Rs. 590 per month, all will be 2 mbps.

    Default Thanks for the reply

Actually i dont blame the telco operators, im going to blame TRAI.
I cant give you direct facts, but based on current news and past trends and knowing how our government operates. . . I wonder how much each telco operator has to pay for their broadband licences. Airtel last i heard is buying bandwidth from Singapore.
3G was supposed to be lunched mid 2007, postponed to 2008; each telco op has to pay around 1400 Cr(for the licence). and as if thats not enough, 37.5% tax for the import of equipment.
Ill tell you what, if our so called TRAI wants us (the people) to have good BW then they will do so by giving telco op's incentives, however our TRAI milks telco ops, inturn milking us.
Now BSNL (since it is government owned) comes out with 2mbps (note that they didnt mention if the useage was unlimited) wonder if BSNL had to pay that Licence fee? There would be no point in offering me unlimited BW and givin me 1GB worth of downloads.

Default airtel bb is sucking now

    hi all
i am new to the forums.i am from delhi and got my 250 combo plan with a night top up in december.i was told then by both the sales manager and the the guy who gave me a confirmation call that i would get double speeds at night.i got for 3 months.now for the past 3 weeks i am losing my speeds in 1 hour of usage.i complained and they told that in night top up you will not get double speeds, putting all their commitments like in a trash bin.now i made a complaint to core.nic.in about this and lets se what happens.

yesterday only i accidently put my d-link dsl502t router off,and when i restarted it the speeds were back to normal, which were gone agin after 1 hour of usage.happened three times in a row...why : airtel was speed throttling me....a bad thing.....i was awake all night since i needed to complete my distro download...

now i read about the telnet scripting tool on this forum ...and tried to schedule it in windows vista...but somehow oly tst10.exe starts and not my reboot script which allows the modem to reboot every one hour(hence for me double speeds full night!)....

admin plz could u explain moe about the parameters...where to insert them
"Create a task to run tst10.exe with the command line parameter /r:reboot.txt"

i am on vista and inserted /r:reboot.txt to add arguments(optional) space but only tst starts, not the script..
if i add /r:reboot.txt to the file name...tst does not start...

I suggest all memebrs not to install any such script.
    They are useless.

I heard somewhere that the new cable laying of broadband net has been stopped in our place and that's the reason that airtel is not expanding to many places in our city, this is the reason i got when I tried to apply for airtel in our place. I saw reliance doing a clever job in laying cable with single line drench rather than a big drench to put cables in the road and this way they are protecting the road as well as their job is also get done. I hope others too follow suit like reliance.

Yeah that is the bright side but what about the extra bandwith which we would have to pay. I dont think they would offer unlimited 2 mbps packages for home users any soon.

    Default Definitely going on

I had the 999 (256kb) plan for about 6 months and last month decided to upgrade to 1499 (512kb). The 1st month I got the full whack, but now strangely since the last bill date I seem to be limited to around 300kb with quite routine oscillations to 0kb.

At this point I will either downgrade or find a new provider...

Default Rebooting Modem has no effect

I can now confirm that modem rebooting does not alleviate the problem whatsoever. This means either the congestion is genuine or airtel have implemented a new and dastardly way of pining throttling permanently.

This all started during the holiday period, but that should in theory lighten the load, however I started to notice more and more indian torrents appearing on the web in the last couple of months, it could be that india is set to become the biggest leeching country in the world. Who said we aint ****?

    Smile Perfect ISP

I was in bangalore for 3 yrs & now in mumbai since a year. Airtel BB is the best in bangalore giving tough & prompt

technical/customer support competition to BSNL & MTNL in delhi & hopefully in entire india, wherever these guys

are. Customers must/are/will be always lucky to have their connection which is a littttle costly than MTNL/BSNL but

atleast reliable unlike BSNL, MTNL & Reliance, the unreliant. Kudos to sunil mittal's vision. I recommend

every/anyone to take Airtel BB connection, blindly.
Their technical/customer service report is excellent & hardly there has been a downtime if i remember. (just 1nce

in 6 mths & that to they do a maintainence on their servers & that to @ night only for 2-4 hrs).
I wish they had their wide presence in mumbai (which is still limited now to some business areas only), so that

they gave a tough competition to the monopolised MTNL in DSL BB technology service & also to other ISPs in mumbai.

There might be something to the previous post. Customer service is pretty good compared to other Indoo companies.

Well I did take the BB throttling up with them, eventually they admitted that they had some how "accidently" switched me back to my previous plan though the monetary accounting system did not.

My speed is now returned for how long I know not. OK so customer service was pretty prompt once it got going but lets face it if Airtel is so great it shouldnt have happened in the 1st place.

Airtel is surely one of the best boradband in Indian market right now because it has a great customer care service and more over it may be a little expesnive as compared to other Service providers but it is still acceptable.

I am also very much satisifed with the Airtel connection. I think it is one of the best ISP right now in India with great custome care service but i think that they could have done a little much better with the service prices.

Airtel is a good ISP but i think that they could have provided the same services for a little bit less cost as of the price they are offering there services right now.
