The airtel's modems if connected through USB are not stable at all. They would show connected but the modem has hanged and now you need to restart the modem. This problems comes due to CPU interrupts as explained by Airtel.

All ISPs are preferring lan cards over USB's I believe. My ISP also said the same. I am not sure the reason for it though.
Yes the reason is pretty OK. If they have a circuit which has both LAN and USB which they normally have then router is affected by interrupts if connected through USB. This is because of technical differences between USB and LAN. But just a USB router with no LAN things will be OK.
