Default Hows you experience with 8Mbps

    Hi all,
I was very happy when airtel announced 8Mbps broadband. i took new connection with airtel and changed my tariff from 128kbps line. but dint notice any change. still files r downloading at around 140KB/s . if u ask thir technical team, they will ask u to download file from microsoft. which is acutally good around 800KB/s. But except that site u wont get that speed from any site. seems they have alloted some more bandwidth in thir gateway for that site. except that u wont get that speed with any site. above that u wont feel 8Mbps while u browse pages gets loaded similar to 128kbps. but airtel speed test site shows 9Mbps (Big bluff). when u chk with MySpeed - Speed Test it shows 1.7Mbps.

Wht about the other 8Mpbs subscribers r u people getting anywhere around 1MB/s download from various sites.

I would like to correct you here..
If you are getting 800KB/s while downloading from the mocrosoft server then your speed is indeed pretty good for that matter.. The reason you are not getting similar speed for every other site is that its not just a one sided affair, the servers uploading speed has to match the speed you can download at as well for you get get faster downloads.

Most websites offer a max of 10mbps upload from their servers but then that is divided between the number o users using that site at that very moment.

If you try torrents you will see that after some time your download speed will rise as the number of users increase for that torrent file.

hey...ur best bet is to try downloading any file (preferably above 50mb) using a download manager (best is DAP)...you will easily get to find out the maximum download speed that you can get, since DAP downloads from multiples sites (mirrors), if available.

and yea...torrents also good, as another person told...preferably something that has a lot of seeds (like p0rn )

Well i have not used there 8mpbs line till now but i think that you sould be able to download stuff from other website for the same speed at which you can on Microsoft website. I think you should call them again and ask them to completely define why you dont get the offered speed for other websites when you are offered the service.

May be since the plan is at its very early stages, they will take sufficient time to allocate the proper bandwidth and allocate it. I do not know whether they lay down special cables for the 8 mbps plan. Because i have a doubt that whether the old cables would have the provision of carrying such huge chunks of data to a wider place where intially they were carrying only less. Please clarify my doubt.
