Best Unlimited Broadband - Mumbai - Coming from US Speeds
Hey guys...

I've been living in the US for 7 or so years and I was looking into figuring out what would be the best unlimited broadband service in Mumbai / Bombay.

I would be living in the Andheri area where in the past I've used MTNL DSL, VSNL Dialup (long ago), Tata-7Start Ethernet Cable Internet.

I'd like a no hassles, reliable high speed internet package that wont have me PULLING my hair out when online.

I've hated the 7star / Tata "LOGIN" pages. Its irritating to have to log in every time and on every machine in the house (our place has internal CAT cabling all through..)

Thoughts? Advise? Options?

PS: I surf a lot, download torrents (Linux Distros, OSX86 Distros, Windows Servers, MSDN, DVD ISOs, DivX, FLACs, Mp3s etc)

I appreciate your feedback.

I am also wondering why we dont have accurate numbers, surveys and reviews of ISPs using a DSLReports or SpeedGuide.net measurement mechanism. I did go an look at the SG.net stats for Bombay & then for Mumbai & then for Andheri.. etc.

I am wondering how many actual samples / users info are those stats based on.

PS: I have lowered expectations as compared to the US but want to find the best possible.

PPS: How is Airtel ? and what's its availability in Andheri / Juhu?

I would say go for Airtel and if being online at all times is very important for you then have a back up in place is money is not a conscern for you.

A combination of Mtnl and Airtel with Airtel being the main connection and say Rs500 something package with mtnl for if and when airtel goes down which it doesnt very often.

Another option is getting Airtel and keeping a data card or one of those usb things from Reliance which will work all across India and browsing is never a problem with this kind of connection and it comes at Rs750 a month for a 1gb limit and I have found it very usefull as my sify connection goes down every now and then and I have to rely on reliance data card which Ive been using for some time now.

Default What's your opion one year down the line?

Hello,

It's almost a year since you posted about the High Speed Internet Service providers. I have just relocated to Mumbai from USA and am a bit frustrated with on-and-off service of MTNL Triband DSL starter plan (Rs.250 or something) that is installed at my parents place.

If the MTNL Triband DSL service was uninterrupted then I would be okay with it and would have taken my time to explore a better speed package but since it is interrupting every 10 minutes, it is very frustrating and I want to get another "reliable, uninterrupted and cheap" broadband service quickly.

It will be great if you can share you experience and advice as that will help me avoid the false starts and mistakes that you may have already gone through in the last year.

Thanks in advance!

Dude switch to reliance(wired) Broadnet or Airtel DSL

using Govt. DSL internet in India is pain in like pain A** if u don't believe then browse BSNL & MTNL forum for a while then u will understand its flooded with complaints and complaints, its because the network of Govt. isp's like BSNL and MTNL is ages old and they don't want to upgrade their infrastructure only Reliance and Airtel are good in DSL because they don't rely on exchanges they give connectivity from their BTS(base transceiver system)a.k.a mobile tower, apart from DSL reliance gives connectivity on Metro Ethernet which is backed by Fiber Optic network till now its the best mode of connectivity in India, if reliance metro Ethernet is available in ur area then consider yourself lucky!!!

Thanks Ookla. It would be interesting to see what crashnburn_in says based on his experience of the past one year. I was looking for someone from Mumbai to share their experience.

I read about Reliance Metro Ethernet but it is very expensive. I liked your idea about Reliance Broadnet and Airtel DSL but they appear to be all below 1 MB speeds. Someone recommended IDEA internet too.

I am in a dilemma because the heavyduty plans are quite expensive while regular plans are also facing interruptions.

Do you have any explicit suggestions about which particular plan and what speed of Reliance Broadnet and Airtel DSL are good in MUMBAI?

reliance <1mbps plans are pocket friendly but >1mbps UL plans burn hole in pocket!!! i think u have browsed reliance broadband site regarding tariffs, dude their site is not updated from long time most of people are in misconception who visited that site and saw highly priced tariffs, and u r saying they are below 1 mbps, right now only reliance is giving 1mbps and 2 mbps true UL plans without any caps etc but they are damn expensive 1 mbps costs 2100PM and 2mbps 5000 pm excluding taxes!!!!

so here are combo plans

500 Kbps @ Rs 1199 (includes rs 150 calling)
300 Kbps @ Rs. 649 (includes rs 150 calling)
100 Kbps @ 499 (includes rs 75 calling )

both the plans comes with combo offer in which u get a landline phone with 150 calls free on 300 and 500kbps plans.

without combo plans as follows

75 kbps 400pm
150 kbps 750 pm
300 kbps 800 pm
600 kbps 1400pm
1 mbps 2100 pm
2 mbps 4999 pm

all these plans are pure unlimited download much as u like.

u can also opt for airtel but they have implemented FUP in which ur speed will be reduced to 50% when u reach certain limit now its ur choice, if u r download savvy and want extra bandwidth like 300kbps in 256K price and so on then go with reliance otherwise airtel.

What's FUP? I have never heard of this before. When you talk about limit, are you refering to download limit?
