DTH Satellites are generally beaming signals from the South East side - at least for Dish TV, TataSky and DD Direct. On my terrace, I have seen the dishes pointing in more or less the same directions.

I am not sure for BigTV or Sun DTH but I do not expect much difference from them either. The reason is that geo-synchnous orbit for covering entire India mandates that the satellites are positioned near the equator. Also communication satellites need to be in line of sight with other satellites so that they can freely exchange signals.

If you simply cannot put the dish on your terrace, then I am afraid that it is no go for you. You will have to make do with cable.

you can get it fixed/placed on the east facing exteriors of the wall of your flat. i have seen some DTH setups like this in some houses. the initial process might be difficult. but firstly, you should talk to the society committee about the problem. if you can get it placed on the terrace - thats the best option.

    Hi all,
I am Rishi. I recently read your post and have some valuable suggestions. I will suggest that you go in for Airtel dish which does get installed outside the window doors if reception is available. I recently got it installed outside the window of my first floor flat and am very happy with Airtel's performance. Since they have mpeg-4 technology, it also gives you better sound and picture quality.

@CTT, there is no relevance of an East facing wall. The dish need to be aligned and pointed to the satellite beaming down the signal.

For DD-Direct, TataSky and DishTV, the dish receiver needs to point to South East at an angle of 30° to 55°. It all depends upon the latitude of your city/town. Most of these satellites are near the equator or slightly south of it. So if you are living in North India, the angle of the dish need to be more acute as compared to the subscriber living in the South.

All you need is a perfect line of sight with the satellite. Technicians do not recommend installing on the side wall or balcony, especially for apartments on lower floors. This is because tree and branches may grow in time and obstruct the direct line of sight. Hence the terrace is recommended. Terrace also gives the maximum flexibility of installation. On the side walls, the installation may require use of complex wall brackets.
