Default dvd recorder for recording from set topbox

I would like to record some educational programs but unfortunately the dvr provided by airtel and tatasky do not allow to transfer recorded content to a external device. Which will not solve my purpose.
So please suggest dvd recorder to connect to the set top box available in the market preferably with inbuilt hard disk drive.

    Really? How?

@kmosksha, plain DVD recorders are available in the market. But the disadvantage is that it does not provide programming and scheduling capability. You must record when you watch.

The main idea is it is not supposed to be watched on an external device.

I have the same question , but it looks like everyone owning a PVR due to the high cost and the obvious voids of warranty are not willing to experiment with the device.

I have some theories but someone actually owning the device will have to check to see if it works

    1) Ive noticed that Airtel PVR has an HDMI port , it would be possible to connect the Airtel PVR to your graphics cards / Main Boards HDMI port then get some sort of HDMI Input Video Recording software to record the video that you play on your PVR [Time Consuming , but a possible solution]

    2) The Internal 160 GB HDD can be cloned and then swapped with a 1TB HDD, the cloning will hopefully take care of any software interface issues. [This will obviously void your warrenty but its worth a shot, if it works then it will give you about 640 Hrs of 576p recording on a 1TB HDD]

again these are all theories, someone would have to take a bold step to check to see if it works .

OK. I may be wrong here but I think that DRM has been implemented in these STBs.

    1. When DRM is implemented, one cannot connect HDMI out from one device to another device's HDMI in and record content. DRM prevent digital content copying.

    2. The content of the PVR HDD will be digitallly encrypted using DRM. While copying will be possible, playback will not be possible.

Of course there may be softwares that break DRM but this is not worth the effort. Tunebite is one software that "sort of" breaks DRM. What it does is record the video/audio during playback on a DRM enabled device.
*** Never argue with an idiot. ***

One can always record using a plain DVR as follows:

    Dish/LNB ==> STB ==> STB (composite/component/HDMI) out ==> DVR ==> DVR (composite/component/HDMI) out ==> TV

But as I said, the following issues will be faced:
    • You can record what you watch - or you must tune the STB to the channel that you wish to record.
    • You must turn the STB and DVR on manually at the preset period
    • No programming or scheduling
You can replace DVR with VCR also, if you own one.

But I wonder why someone would like to record the crappy TV soap operas? If it is Discovery, etc., their programs are repeated again anyway.

Another note: The channel logo, DTH logo, etc., everything will be recorded.

Soap's and Discovery stuff is available for download from BT & 720p anyway, its for special occasions [Republic day parade] & religious programs that don't repeat.
