Default Is there significant difference in picture quality of non-HD channels through HD STB?

I have been using Airtel Digital TV for 3 years now and I am satisfied with it. I have had no complaints so far and I find its Mega pack particularly suited to my needs. Its sad to know so many people have a problem with Airtel DTH, but I'm sure there problems are genuine and I hope they get sorted. However, I have a different concern.

In an ongoing offer, I can exchance my old Airtel STB for a new Airtel HD STB for just 1750 bucks. Its affordable and lucrative. However, I wanted to know from those using Airtel HD and others having any knowledge of the same, is there any difference in picture quality of all channels while viewing through Airtel HD STB? I have learnt on this forum that any HD STB, including Airtel's, upscales all SD content to 1080i, i.e, near HD. Airtel currently has just 14-15 true HD channels and I have no plans on increasing my rentals by subscribing to any HD pack.

I am only interested in knowing if my TV viewing experience will get any better for all channels if I switch from Airtel Digital TV to Airtel HD STB? By the way, I have a Sony Bravia LCD TV.

Once you get your HD set top box from Airtel the only difference in quality will be for HD channels not all the channels. The difference in picture and sound quality is considerable for HD channels and they will increase in future. The difference is such that I only watch non HD channels when there is nothing of interest coming on HD channels and watching a movie on Star movies HD is a treat.

On top of that you also need an hd-tv to enjoy benefits of hd.

Also 1080i is not near hd; it is full hd. But as admin rightly pointed out there will be no difference in sd channels pq.

Its makes a slight improvment in the signal quality being sent to the TV, since HDMI interface is used to connect the HD box with the TV other than the normal RCA/Component input.

@ Admin- Okay. So, the SD content remains the same. Sad! Then I'd rather wait till all channels go HD.
@ just4kix- Yeah, the TV is full HD. And full HD is 1080p, not 1080i.
@ nevinjohn- Ya, so the difference must be only a little or not at all as pointed out by others.

Thanks all. I think we should all wait till OLED TVs hit the market. That's going to change the TV viewing experience drastically. Maybe people will stop calling it the Idiot Box after all! ;-)

Oled is still a way too far. And expect the costs to be prohibitive in the first 3 years. For sheer pq, black levels, contrast, response time, etc., the plasma cannot be beaten. Videophiles swear by the plasma.
