Default Discounted SMS Rates not Applicable on Feb 14
Just received an SMS from Airtel mentioning

Please note that discounted SMS rates will not be valid on Feb 14/09 for more SMS 3 days to 222 (toll free)

What the F....

I have 200 SMS free per month on my plan....I never get around to using it. I only get to use SMS on occasions like this..

Anyone else heard about this?

Is it the same with your service provider? How can they promise 200 free sms when selling a plan and then send a sms one day saying that tomorrow you will be charged for an SMS as lots of people will be sending SMS's and we need to make money

This is not new. Airtel and other service provider have been sending these kind sms from more than a year, mentioning that discounted sms rates are not valid on national holidays, diwali, holi, new year eve ( 31st Dec & Jan 1st), valentine day, dussehra among other festivals. You should have noted these sms before.

because we will send sms on these days either its a 1 Re or 10paisa, so companies try to make most of it .

Thats the funny thing, I didnt receive it. My wife did, both of us have corporate Airtel connection and we have had it for 4 years now...never saw it before...

What a bunch of thieves, they can never provide proper service but they want to charge for everything.

Every Holiday/occasion the Network gets so congested that everything comes to a standstill, they have never been able to fix that but they are shameless enough to charge more in this duration...

I wish someone takes them to task and gives them what they deserve

Like mentioned in one of my earlier threads, TRAI has intervened in the call drops/congestion issue and has advised the providers to upgrade their infrastructure or change the per minute current billing to per second billing.

I know cool techie, I read that thread too.

The problem is TRAI just keeps on barking and no one listens. Take for example

Number Portability-Amazing concept but no idea when it will be launched in India

Network Congestion-Guidelines given, Implementation promised

Chinese Mobile-Initially supposed to be banned by Jan 2009 now delayed...god only knows till when

Internet Speed/Bandwidth-?

Sometimes I feel that these are all mirages and as soon as we will get near them they will disappear...

TRAI is only a toothless old tiger who no longer has the power to hunt and can only roar.
And the operators are well aware of this fact.

Here is an idea:

a) SMS to 222 is free right?
b) So every minute on Feb-14, send an SMS to 222 saying "You are SOBs. You promise one thing and retract on your promise later".

I get RIM 2 RIM sms free, as per my plan, even on special dates
I have tested this on earlier occations.

Vodafone at least is not doing this cheap thing ... there is a pre-specified list of holidays on which vodafone free sms are not used ... but they seem to have missed valentine's day ... i did sent some messages today which were deducted from the free sms balance only ...

Keep a sharp lookout on your balance, u might loose them in the coming days. I was charged the normal rate today for messages send from my Vodafone. The message pack ceased to work for me today.

No. this is not happening in my case. dont know why. the last call/sms charge summary option is enabled in my mobile. the charges deducted are shown as soon as i end any call or send a message. "charges for your sms to ~number~ were deducted from your sms bonus ... " ... this message is coming up ... and the count is decreasing by one each time .. maybe it depends upon the area circle
