Default EDGE/GPRS charges and quality??

Hello.... Can someone tell me what are the charges for airtel gprs (without the unlimited plan)?

Are there any site access restrictions as in are you able to browse freely on websites/wapsites other than their airtel live wapsite?

What's their quality like? I had been using vodafone with great speeds, then switched to aircel, in the hopes that 3rd party software would be able to access the internet (the only problem with vodafone).... little did i know that their "pocket internet" won't even work on the inbuilt browser (let alone other software ) .... takes > 1min to access facebook's mobile site login page (!!!!) (**IF THE CONNECTION DOESNT BREAK IN BETWEEN** )

Please take the time to go through the post and answer the 3 queries above... m at my wits end here...

Thanks!

Airtel Live! is a wap service that only allows connection from inbuilt browser. It only allows browsing of Airtel wap websites and very few other website if you search using Google. This service is automatically activated in Airtel Prepaid connection and it will take 10 ps for 10 KB of data transfer.

In Vodafone you need to activate this service (Vodafone Live!) manually by sending SMS.

If you need to access all other non wep websites and support for 3rd party browsers, then you will require a GPRS plan like Airtel Mobile Office! which has monthly tariff system.

Mobile Office Tariff Plans

Rs, 350 [100 MB & 10 ps/10 KB for extra usage]
Rs, 599 [1 GB & 10 ps/10 KB for extra usage]
Rs, 799 [1.5 GB & 10 ps/10 KB for extra usage]
Rs, 999 [Unlimited]

Don't know about the speed/quality. I never tried Airtel Mobile Office. But you will be able to use Opera Mini with it.

PS, For me Vodafone Live! was more stable and faster than Airtel Live! and also had support for more websites.

that answered my question Archer.. thanks dude...! i had the feeling that it wouldnt be so great on airtel... i can access net with opera (which is inbuilt as well on my 2700) on voda... i can access any web/wapsite, no rental. and its damn fast.... i guess i wud have to live with no 3rd party software on my phone...
must say, these companies are constantly hatching different dastardly schemes to make people spend more... i now understand that the 3rd party thing on voda probably isnt a 'bug', else they wud've taken a complaint when i talked to them... but anyways i can at least access any site on it without restrictions.

thanks again....

AIRTEL also have pay per usage plan @30ps/50kb,25rs/3mb you need to activate this plan by dialing *567hash and select activate then diffrent plans are displayed.
Speed varies according to your location. In metro cities like Mumbai this is about 20 to 25kB/sec and in other places it is about 5 to 6 KB/sec.
I had used it before when they had monthly unlimited plan of 349/mth. Recent plans are more costly.
If you want to go for mobile internet then choose bsnl. Few months back AIRTEL is cheapest mobile network providing mobile internet ,now it is only bsnl that is providing mobile internet at low cost rates.
If you have PC and bsnl landline at home then go for bsnl broadband combo500c plan which much cheaper and have excellent speed of about 2mbps.
If you have modem in pc there is no need to buy from company, from bsnl modem is available on monthly rent of 60rs/mth or one time price of 1400rs. your monthly bill will be only 552rs for both landline and broadband if you did't cross there free usage limit of 1.5gb and free landline call limit of 175 calls plus modem rent of 60/mth if you have taken from bsnl on rent basis and only 552rs/mth if you taken modem on one time price basis or have your own provided that you are not crossed free limit for call and internet usage.
For extra usage data rate is 80ps/mb and 1rs/call .
This plan also have night unlimited facility from 2am to 8am so you can do all heavy downloads of movies, music, game during this period.

I agree. Now I am planing to switch to BSNL. I only subscribed to Airtel after hearing about the awesome speed and low tariff a few months before. Now I am planning to to change to BSNL prepaid.

But BSNL GPRS is charging 10 ps/1 KB from prepaid customers. And there is no unlimited option I think. Airtel Live/Mobile Office and Vodafore Live tariff is 10 ps/ 10 KB.

I don't Agree, Cause I use BSNL GPRS 199 Unlimited. It has a downloading speed of max 25 KBps. Only Postpaid can be used for this
----------------------@stark---------------------------------------------------------------------------
You will need to configure GPRS access points to use it with 3rd Party Applications.
Give me details about your mobile and service provider and also the list of configuration settings.

I was talking about BSNL GPRS for Prepaid connections. BSNL GPRS speed is really good, way better than Vodafone Live and Airtel Live services. I also had the Rs. 199 unlimited plan (GPRS+MMS) in Postpaid connection.
