I am answering this rather philosophically.

Every phone is unlockable as long as the lock is a software/firmware lock.

And iPhone cannot have a hardware lock else they will have to manufacture different batches for different carriers. It is the carriers who have an exclusive agreement with Apple for iPhone in that country and then they develop the special firmware that locks them to themselves.

But there are people who manage to break the lock. You will just have to search the internet to find the unlocking facility.

don't forget jail braked iphone runs slower and battery life gets low, indeed Apple stuff is pricey but i wont suggest anyone to do such things just to "show off" new iphone 4 because these days value of phone is not like we have decade ago so buying locked from US and unlocking it and use in India before its launch wont make you look like a king, i've seen lots of people who buy apple stuff for just show off.

Is that so? Why should unlocking the phone drain the battery? Honestly, I would like to know.

I never had an iPhone so I don't know. But I had the O2 XDA IIi that was unlocked. I never faced any battery issues. Of course, O2 XDA technology (HTC made) is way different than Apple.

it doesn't drain the battery that fast like you are assuming and yes performance do get affected but i don't have Graphs to show you the precise difference.

No. Graphs are not necessary. I am more interested in knowing the root cause. Why this should happen at all? Basically, any unlock mechanism bypasses the lock.

Iphone 4 uses a micro-sim instead of Mini sim (normal one used). So even if you unlock the iphone you will need a micro sim to make it work.

Option 1- Use scissor and cut your original sim. HIGHLY RISKY!

Option 2- Wait for companies to launch Iphone 4 in India and then request micro sim from them. Would they give it? Maybe yes. Maybe no.

I didnt know such services were being offered!! And Rs. 10/- is pretty cheap!

BTW this micro sim gimmick from apple is ridiculous. Suppose you convert your sim into a micro sim then you would have to get another sim from your service provider incase you want to change your phone or if someone else in family want to use it!
