The guys who do the installation are of the opinion what PVR features will be incorporated shortly via a firmware update and hence the USB port is present for future prospects.

I was also told that USB port at back of STB is for future PVR purpose. Though except TataSky no other DTH operater seem to have introduced it .

PV recording using USB port may lead to unauthorized copying and distribution of contents of various channels. dont you people think so?

Yes. But it is an integral part of the system and all the service providers are planning to enable it in the coming months..

Hmm. i wonder why tata sky + with so many features and inbuilt HDD doesnt provide this feature then. i got to know about it on this forum itself that we can record videos on tata sky+ but not extract them for external use.

i dont know whether tata sky + provides USB port. but even if it does, it does not allow you to extract recorded stuff from the STB for external use.

Post USB port - for internet ???

In my opinion, all STB's with USB ports have an internal modem. DTH service providers are planning to introduce internet via DTH in future. but as of now it's not exactly know when it's going to happen.

Also, internet requires a two way communication between dish antenna & satellite.Right now there is only one way communication as the dish catches signals, but has no means to give any feedback back to the network.

Internet through DTH is not practical cost wise/technology wise. It'll never happen in India.

Have you ever used a sat phone? I have and I have used the internet provided on sat phones as well.... to sum it up well they both suck at it. Sat based internet connection might be a feasible option in extremely remote areas like say antartica or greenland remote areas where you cannot pull cables around but for cities and towns its too costly.

The lag while talking on a sat phone is like 5 to 6 seconds and when I used internet using the sat phone latency to this site was 2300ms to 3000ms on an average which is not acceptable atall.
