    Default Big TV HD Channels

Like mentioned in another thread I have seen that Big TV are providing 250 HD like quality channels. I have heard of SD channels and HD channels but what exactly is 'HD like' channels? I mean you either have SD channels or HD channels, there is nothing in between as far as I know.

If anyone has a clue, please can you explain what is 'HD like channels'?

"HD Like Channels" are SD channels upscaled by means of some hardware by the provider. They are not true HD (asli HD) channels. They provide better PQ than standard SD channels but essentially are pseudo-HD. Dish-TV started this fashion of fake HD channels and advertising as HD channels. The ad read: Dish TV is the only DTH platform that provides 50 (or some such number) HD channels. In reality, there were only 8-10 real 1080i HD channels and the rest upscaled. This practice continues still and DishTV continues to call them as HD-channels. They can be taken to court for false adverstising but the only reason that they cannot are because TRAI has not correctly defined the term HD. A resolution of "1920x1080 interlaced scan" alone is not HD - there are other factors such as bit-rate, clarity, true source, 5.1 sound and many other factors.

At least BigTV is honest enough is calling these as "HD like channels". DishTV is extremely shameless in this regard.

Basically Dish TV are doing fraud with their customers in a way. Your right about them being taken to court for giving false information, but I didnt know that TRAI hasnot defined HD.

Correction: TRAI has not properly defined HD. Their definition just states a resolution of 1920x1080. Any upscaler can do that. My blu-ray player can upscale (a DVD) to HD resolution (1080p). That does not mean I am watching HD - I am still watching a DVD.

These HD like channels as companies like to call them are still a lot better then SD. They may not satisfy the technical specs but visually lot better then SD.

Talking about HD like quality, it reminded me that there is an English channel called 'Movies Now', they advertise during their ad breaks claiming its HD movies they show and even in their logo its says it times Movies Now HD (I think), but its not HD quality, you can clearly tell this difference! Does anyone know about this channel and whether it is actually HD or not?

While that is true, the companies are charging as if they are HD channels when in reality they are not. You wouldn't want to pay 5-star prices at a 3-star restaurant. Would you?

There are two channels - Movies Now which is SD and Movies Now HD which, obviously, is HD. Tatasky shows Movies Now and it is not an HD channel. Providers such as DishTV, Videocon D2H, etc. are showing Movies Now HD which is a true HD channel - 1080i picture and 5.1 Dolby Digital Sound.

Note that none of the DTH channels are FULL HD. The definition of FULL HD is:

    - 1920x1080 resolution frame
    - Progressive scan (the 'p' part)
    - 1080 lines
    - MPEG4.264 AVC with a bitrate of 18 mbps or above
    or MPEG2 with a bitrate of 30mbps
    - Full HD sound such as Dolby TruHD or DTS HD Master Audio

Why do DTH companies remove channels?

I don't think that there are any CBS channels anywhere on any DTH platform. I may be wrong but somehow don't think so. What we DO get is American soap operas, sitcoms and talk shows on various English channels such as Star World, Z Cafe, AXN, Fox, Fox Crime, etc.
