Default Reliance selling DTH to Sun TV

It was just a few weeks ago I posted a thread about Reliance Digital TV (previosuly Big TV) not being in the lime light, and just today I have read that Reliance is in talk with Sun TV to sell its DTH services, it is said that the business would be sold for Rs2000 crore.

Reliance Digital TV has been in business for 5 years and it offered HD DVR set top boxes as well, they were also a DTH provider who has the largest channel bouquet.
In the beginning Reliance Digital TV was doing well and was a first in everything, it was the first to provide the HD DVR, which had 200 hours of recording, with a universal remote.

Apparently Airtel DTH are also in talks with Liberty Global to sell their 25% stake, seems like both DTH companies are going into financial losses.

I think Reliance for Reliance it was hard keeping up with the DTH side of things.

DTH companies make losses on many fronts. Now this is as per reports in the media and press releases and not my own assessment:

    1. The first very top of the list is the cost of STB and other CPE. DTH companies claim that each SD STB alone costs them Rs. 2000 or so while the HD STB is Rs. 500 more. The cost of dish and LNB is extra. Yet they have to give a connection at Rs. 1500 to Rs. 2000.
    2. Content providers such as Star-Fox, Sony, ESPN-SS, etc. charge a lot for the content.
    3. The DTH license cost, government taxes including entertainment tax is a big burden.
    4. Satellite and transponder cost is high and no pun intended here.
    5. The package cost to consumer is already high and they cannot increase it further.
    6. At the end of the whole P&L statement, there is not much on the "P" side.

Personally, I don't know how much is true or false.

Reliance lost its name some time ago, it had its phase then vanished. Even now some people dont know that Big TV changed its name to Reliance Digital TV. There are many other DTH providers who had better service and Reliance lagged in this area, Reliance has many other products but DTH was not their thing, so out with DTH and in with 4G I guess!

The only main DTH providers which have some stand are Tata Sky, Dish TV and Videocon. Big TV was something which was there but never really had risen in terms of subscriber's.

Videocon too is not a big player in the game, they are just trying as they lost most of the games!

Well either you will still have your services but under a different name, or have the rest of the months money returned which I think is quite unlikely. I think most probably it would be that you will still have your services but see a different logo on your tv, instead Reliance it would be Sun TV.

Well Videocon isnt a big player but I think they are leading as they are providing more HD channels but an reasonable price.

    Check the prices...
Videocon - Platinum HD pack, costs Rs.481 with 21 original HD channels
Dish TV - HD Premiere pack, costs Rs. 499 with 23 original HD channels.

Tata Sky rates are quite high and the number of HD channels they provide is nothing as compared to Videocon or Dish TV.

The ways to detect true HD channel:

    - check the picture quality
    - check the channel logo - the monogram "HD" must be part of the logo

OMG cant believe that, you wouldn't think a company would delete a customers comment, but instead reply to their questions! Somethings fishy!!!
