Mainly because it provides extreme security in emails and is favoured by corporates. Corporates are paranoid when it comes to security. Blackberry's are used by the senior management and they are most anxious that emails are not snooped around.

This is not to say that other push email devices are lagging in security. But the advanced encryption provided by Blackberry air services are at least one step ahead.

Finally, not all BB devices are expensive. The startup model is only 12~13 K - which is same as the equivalent models from Nokia, Sony-Erricsson, Motorola, etc. Also, the top end models from Nokia and SE are more expensive than top end BB models. For example SE Xperia X2 is nearly 40K.

All other phone makers have phones costing as little as 1K to 35~40K and majority of their models are in the 4K to 12K range. But BB has smartphones only in its lineup, and hence they are costlier. So it is a misconception that they are very costly.

A lot of Blackberry success owes to its uncomplicated and smooth OS....

RIM servers are located in Canada but they do not store the email content - they act as the conduit.

are you sure they dont store emails, because when Indian Govt. asked Airtel to open blackberry for Govt. scanners, Airtel was reluctant and told that emails are stored in RIM servers that are in Canada..

i am saying that encryption of data maybe higher with blackberry, but why should we trust a company that is seven seas distant, and how can i know that the email is not stored any place other than my mobile ?

mainly, you are paying for 2 phones.
do u know why the same models are available on CDMA as well as GSM networks?

it is because a BlackBerry handset actually switches its technology according to the sim / uim card inserted.

if u insert an Airtel/idea/vodafone sim, it switches to gsm netowrk,
if u insert a tata / reliance cdma uim, then the phone switches to cdma network.

ask anyone who actually uses it.

Build quality wise, a BB is much better than most other handsets.

Not all Blackberry handsets are CDMA compatible. And ALL CDMA BB must be programmed, they DO NOT support CDMA RUIM. There are few CDMA/GSM BB, but they can support only one number at a time i.e. GSM - if SIM inserted and CDMA - if SIM removed.

Only e-mail sent using the blackberry messenger are encrypted. Where a BB is used to access GMail/Yahoo or similar mails, these mails are always stored in respective servers. Mail sent using BB Messenger is encrypted using a key which is unique to each BB handset. So even RIM can not decrypt them. This BB Mesenger service has been recently blocked by the UAE Govt. and it seems that soon India will follow the same path.

You can say Push email is like Outlook express with added feature of push which means as soon as the email is received by server on your address it is directly pushed to your device with a notification so you can know the moment it is received on your account.

As for outlook you have to click send and receive or configure it check at intervals.

The push email via Mail for Exchange AS said by Nokia is not as secure as Blackberry, but for general use its good. You should have a unlimited plan of internet for it. on nokia. for blackberry there are different plans for email and email+browsing

India would never be banning Blackberry as such. But the BB Messenger Service is under scanner for the last one year. And the Home Ministry is hardening its stand.

Governement cant ban blackberry in India crores in revenue is being generated by blackberry from which governement also gets something, the last step would be just like other countries like USA and China where RIM (Blackberry owner) has agreed to share their public security key with the government so they can scan them for security purposes. Most of the corporates use them and from last 3 years we are listening that government is planning to stop RIM services. Dont worry it would never happen.

Blackberry "RIM" has agreed to Saudi Arabia, to install server in that country, so that The Govt can intercept mail etc from users . ( for security reasons )
Same has been promised to Indian Government.
'RIM" is not giving any access to their code etc.
Recently there was a news that one mobile phone provider in INDIA has given more than 4000 connections to a SINGLE address !

BlackBerry are perfect for corporate use. Good integration with Google services, very powerful applications (even if Apple catalog is bigger), a free encrypted messenger service, and, frankly speaking, I prefer the real keyboard than touch screen!
