Digital TV by Airtel or Airtel Digital TV DTH is a DTH satellite television service provided in India. The Airtel digital TV DTH service was first thought about with the launch of the first DTH service in the year 2004. It was done in form of the Dish TV by Essel Group’s Zee Entertainment Enterprises. As of now Airtel Digital TV is the 6th major DTH service launched in India. The service has gained a good reputation in no time.
When the public broadcaster the Doordarshan network launched it’s free to air DTH service known as DD Direct Plus and when in 2006 Tata Tele services collaborated with British Sky Broadcasting to form Tata Sky, Airtel considered launching the service with a new name.
In 2007 when the DTH war heated up, Airtel announced a launch of its own DTH service. As a result Airtel launched its services known as Airtel digital TV on the 9th of October in 2008.
Airtel digital TV DTH service is actually a part of the Bharti Telemedia Ltd which is a subsidiary of the Bharti Airtel Limited. The company is owned by Sunil Mittal who is a telecom giant generally credited with bringing the mobile Services in India .
The Airtel digital TV started its operation by using “Come Home To The Magic” as a slogan. As of now the service offers around 200 TV channels. It also offers the WorldSpace Satellite Radio channels. The company has plans under which it wants to increase the number of channels. The company is also planning to bring internet on DTH with the help of its Airtel live services. The company is actually the second national level DTH service provider with a mpeg-4 technology.
Currently the service uses the MPEG-4 digital compression coupled with the latest DVB-S2 technology. It uses the INSAT 4CR at 74°East for the transmission of signals.
