How to test the internet speed of your connection?

by Parminder on 01/01/2009

If you want to test the speed of your connection, here are some tips.

In the past times, people used a simple method to test the speed of their internet connection. People simply used to download the file from the internet. They used to download a file of a specific size and they used to time it as this was done. This was an adequate attempt. It is good for testing the upload speed also. You can actually test the speed this way, but it may be a little difficult to do.

There also are some online services that can help you run a bandwidth test to check the speed of both downloading and uploading. A bandwidth test is simply done with the help of an online service. It sends your computer a file, which your computer has to download. The computer than goes on to upload the file back to the sender who calculates the time involved in the total procedure.

By doing it this way, the users can get a complete and more accurate internet speed estimate. This estimate can be then used to implement changes that can increase the overall speed of the user’s Internet service. The one thing that is very important to bear in mind, that even if a user has a snail-slow dial up service, there is nothing to worry. There are some new technologies available that can help to check the speed for dial up connection.

So the fact is that no matter what type the connection is, the above said methods are good enough to check the speed. Once the speed is estimated there will be thousands of ways to increase it up and enjoy a better speed and connection.

Actually, most of the internet services that test the speed of our internet connection are still not perfect. All these services have certain limits. Many (including me) get results that show our connection speeds to be way greater than the real one.

The way I would suggest to test your download speed, is to download some file (of about 5-10 MB size) from any of the servers like that of Microsoft’s that provide us the maximum speed we can get (this should be applicable atleast to India). It’s quite simple. Just note the download speed after the downloading has reached about 50%. That will be your real download speed. Never rely on your initial and final speeds.

To test your upload speed, I would suggest seeding a torrent that is on good demand at the time.

Actually, there are lots of ways of finding the speeds, and finally, the choice remains with the user. :)

Hi all,
Can any one suggest a dependable online service to track the bandwidth of the Internet connection? I just need this very badly!
