Yuvraaj Review
Yuvraaj, trappings of nadir for Subhash Gai. I still can’t believe it is the same director or so called showman who made movies like Saudagar and Taal. If you think Kisna is a lowest point then you will review your thinking after you watch this all style no substance movie. Over the years i have seen some pathetic and poorly scripted movies which can be ramified into two categories viz top actors bad script and bad actors bad script. One movie which falls into the former category is Don, where despite some good acting by srk the movie floundered because of poor direction and a banal script. Later category encompasses archetypical B-grade movies which has newcomers and with a fresh university passed out director. These movies are usually amateurish and can be overlooked. But Yuvraaj was a shock not because i went with an expectation (i knew this was another black sheep) but the pathetic performance put by salman khan who is regarded as top notch actor. At an age when he is closer to half century he shouldn't be trying to look cool like a quarter centurions. And to add to this naivety is his eyes which look like they are on verge of disgorging.
Another movie which I reminisce which can come close to this madness was love story 2050. LS2050 had a mediocre or rather lukewarm first half and out of box madness in second half and in Yuvraaj our show dropper accomplishes the same but swaps positions of mediocrity and madness. First half of Yuvraaj made me feel like Subhash gai had taken a leave and left this part to be directed by his academy pass outs. This piece looks completely out of shape, half baked and a puerile attempt at direction. Every scene is so vapid it immediately makes you sedate. By the end of first half i felt someone has just given me a sleeping injection.
However, the movie picks up the pace and catapults you from sleep when Zayed khan is brought back to earth. The rest of movie proceeds to establish the importance of brotherly bonds in a family with Anil Kapoor's character playing a pivotal role. Even though I don’t understand what autism is, Anil comes up with a great performance and makes you sympathize with him. There are no heart touching scenes here but amidst a quagmire of poorly written script he is the only star. Zayed has nothing to do in this movie other then kissing and yelling. Katrina character is like a Barbie doll in your shelf who is only there for her beauty. But in the first half it is this what gives you some solace.
The movie has also become victim to tired and tested clichés like a wheel chaired mamaji, vixen like aunt all scheming for a share of exchequer. There is absolutely nothing in this movie to be happy about and saddest part is it has top actors like Salman and Anil in it. Anil does well in his share but Salman blows it out. In scenes where he has to show intensity and emotion he acts as if "Why should i give a damn". Don’t watch this movie and be happy at home unless you suffer for insomnia and are looking for a substitute to sleeping pills.
