What's the meaning of 'masakalli' in the dove song of Delhi 6?
Its the name of Sonam Kapoor's Dove. So here is the story of the masakalli song which was not at all planned by the director.
Sooraj Barjatya’s “Maine Pyar Kiya” had a pigeon song that became popular and 20 years later Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra has a dove song in his forthcoming film “Delhi-6″. He says it was not part of the original plan.”The song was not really meant to be part of the narrative. I mean, who would think of putting in a song about a dove in a film like ‘Delhi-6′? It just happened. When I came to the pre-climax portion of my script, I was stuck. I needed a continuity link taking the narrative to its finale,” Mehra said in an interview.
Mehra’s much talked-about “Delhi-6″ has a large cast including Amitabh Bachchan, Abhishek, Sonam Kapoor and Gulshan Grover as well as a dove named Masakali who serves as the romantic leitmotif in the plot.
So crucial was the dove to the film that a whole song was written and composed in its honour. The song “Masakali” is sung by Mohit Chauhan whose voice A.R. Rahman had used in “Rang De Basanti”.
“When I narrated the scene to Rahman, he said, ‘I can see a dove here’. I was taken aback. I had never mentioned Sonam’s dove to Rahman. How did he know about it? That’s how the song ‘Masakali’ was born,” said Mehra.
Mehra says the songs fit well in the plot of the movie.
“When Rahman and I did ‘Rang De Basanti’, we didn’t think about anything except how well the songs and music fitted into the plot. The music of ‘Delhi-6′ is again designed only for the film. The dove song ‘Masakali’ makes sense only within the parameters of our plot.”
Full Song Lyrics:
Aye masakali masakali, ud matakali matakali,
Aye masakali masakali, ud matakali matakali.
Aye masakali masa masakali, ud matakali matakali,
Masakali masakali, ud matakali matakali.
Zara pankh jhatak, gayi dhool atak aur lachak machak ke door bhatak.
Ude dagar dagar kasbe khunche nukad basti mein (Yai yai),
Itri se mud, ada se mud karle puri dil ki tamana,
Hawa se jhud, ada se mud, phud phud phud tu hai heera panna re.
Masakali masakali, ud matakali matakali.
Masakali masakali, ud matakali matakali.
Ghar tera saloni, badal ki colony,
Dikhlade thenga in sabko jo udna na jaane.
Udiyo, na dariyo, kar manmaani manmaani man maani,
Bhadiyo, na mudiyon kar nadaani.
Udiyo, na dariyo, kar manmaani manmaani manmaani,
Bhadiyo, na mudiyon kar nadaani.
Gataan le, muskaan le, keh sanana nanana nana hawa,
Bas thaanle, tu jaanle, keh sanana nanana nanan hawa.
Aye masakali masakali, ud matakali matakali,
Aye masakali masa masakali masakali masakali, ud matak matak matak matak.
Tujhe kya gum, tera rishta gafan ki baansuri se hain,
Pawan ki guftagu se hain, suraj ki roshni se hain.
Udiyo, na dariyo, kar manmaani manmaani man maani,
Bhadiyo, na mudiyon kar nadaani.
Udiyo, na dariyo, kar manmaani manmaani man maani,
Bhadiyo, na mudiyon kar nadaani.
Gataan le, muskaan le, keh sanana nanana nana hawa,
Bas thaanle, tu jaanle, keh sanana nanana nanan hawa.
Masakali masakali, ud matak matak matakali,
Masakali masa masa masakali, matak matak matak matak.
In this movie i am looking forward towards sonam kapoor . In the last movie i personally didn't likes her work. I was expecting more good performance from her as she is daughter of Anil Kapoor. This time Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra must have thought some thing good for her. The trailers shows much improvement in her acting and hope this time fans would be satisfied.
And Rameshjeee thanks for the lyrics. I love that song.

amit kool robdale's absolutely correct.....sonam is anil kapoors daughter...
I read it somewhere that major part of this movie was shot in some village in Rajasthan.Anyone who has been to Old Delhi will agree to the fact that it's almost impossible to shoot in labyrinths of Old Delhi.I am gonna watch this movie to see how Rakesh Mehra portrays Old Delhi(part of the city I adore for it's character and chaos)Sonam who's looking very Indian and very feminine.I am going to watch a movie on big screen after three months, hope this flick does not disappoint me.
when was this movie is going to be released.........i wont take kare of bollywood movies so i dont know about them a lot...........i'm also waiting for that movie.........
Almost all the songs are amazing, looking forward to this film...
btw Sonam looks really cute in the masakalli song...
