| Aditya | ADSL Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line (ADSL) is a form of DSL, a data communications technology that enables faster data transmission over copper telephone lines than a conventional voiceband modem can provide. Blacklist blacklist is a basic access control mechanism that allows every access, except for the members of the black list (i.e. list of denied accesses). The opposite is a whitelist, which means allow nobody, except members of the white list. As a sort of middle ground, a greylist, contains entries that are temporarily blocked or temporarily allowed. Greylist items may be reviewed or further tested for inclusion in a blacklist or whitelist. Cookies Cookies are small files that are downloaded to a users computer when they visit a website. They enable the website to remember a user who has visited before, track their actions on the site (such as adding items to a shopping cart) and may be programmed with an expiration date so they are automatically removed after a period of time. D-Link DSL-2640R The D-Link DSL-2640R is a broadband modem router with wireless capability. It is ADSL2+ compatible and has four ethernet ports. DHCP Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol is a network application protocol used by devices (DHCP clients) to obtain configuration information for operation in an Internet Protocol network. This protocol reduces system administration workload, allowing devices to be added to the network with little or no manual intervention. DNS Domain Name System (DNS) is a hierarchical naming system for computers, services, or any resource participating in the Internet. It associates various information with domain names assigned to such participants. DSL DSL or xDSL, is a family of technologies that provides digital data transmission over the wires of a local telephone network. DSL originally stood for digital subscriber loop, although in recent years, the term digital subscriber line has been widely adopted as a more marketing-friendly term for ADSL, which is the most popular version of consumer-ready DSL. DSL can be used at the same time and on the same telephone line with regular telephone, as it uses high frequency, while regular telephone uses low frequency DUN Dial Up Networking (DUN) is an internet standard for connecting to a network via a dial-up modem. It's also the name given to a connection that is set up through Windows, that can connect through a dial-up or broadband modem. IMAP Internet Message Access Protocol or IMAP is Internet standard protocols for e-mail retrieval, in IMAP mail configuration orignal email stays on server and email application allows user to read mails on mail application/ client. IP/ IP address IP address is the unique identificaion provided to every computer on internet. It is assigned by ISP, it consist of few numbers seprated by dots like 69.212.152.86 MTU Maximum Transmission Unit refers to the size (in bytes) of the largest packet that a given layer of a communications protocol can pass onwards. Netgear DG834 Netgear DG834 is a wired modem router with 4 ethernet ports but without wireless capabilities Netgear DG834G Netgear DG834G is exactly same as Netgear DG834 router but with wireless capabilities, there are 4 different versions of this router v1, v2, v3 and v4. This is ADSL 2+ compatiable router. Netgear WG111 It is wireless USB 2.0 adapter, which is used to get wireless signals on desktop computers or computers which don't have built-in wireless reciver. NIC Network Interface Card or LAN adapter is a computer hardware component designed to allow computers to communicate over a computer network. In some cases people call it ethernet card. No Carrier NO CARRIER (capitalized) is a text message transmitted from a modem to its attached device (typically a computer), indicating the modem is not (or no longer) connected to a remote system. POP3 Post Office Protocol version 3 (POP3) is an application-layer Internet standard protocol used by local e-mail clients to retrieve e-mail from a remote server over a TCP/IP connection. POP3 and IMAP4 (Internet Message Access Protocol) are the two most prevalent Internet standard protocols for e-mail retrieval. Virtually all modern e-mail clients and servers support both. PPP Point-to-Point Protocol, or PPP, is a data link protocol commonly used to establish a direct connection between computer and internet. It can provide connection authentication and can also provide transmission encryption privacy and compression. Most of the ISP's advice PPPoE for all connection types. PSTN Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN) is a general term referring to the variety of telephone networks and services that are in place worldwide. SNR Signal-to-noise ratio (SNR or S/N) is defined as the ratio of a signal power to the noise power corrupting the signal. Spyware Spyware is computer software that is installed surreptitiously on a personal computer to intercept or take partial control over the user's interaction with the computer, without the user's informed consent. SSID A Service Set Identifier (SSID) is the name that is used to identify a wireless network. SSL Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) is cryptographic protocols that provide security and data integrity for communications over TCP/IP networks such as the Internet.. TCP/IP Internet Protocol Suite (commonly known as TCP/IP) is the set of communications protocols used for the Internet and other similar networks. It is named from two of the most important protocols in it: the Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) and the Internet Protocol (IP), which were the first two networking protocols defined in this standard. UAC User Account Control (UAC) is a technology and security infrastructure introduced with Microsoft's Windows Vista operating system. It aims to improve the security of Microsoft Windows by limiting application software to standard user privileges until an administrator authorizes an increase in privilege level. USB Universal Serial Bus (USB) is a serial bus standard to connect devices to a host computer. USB was designed to allow many peripherals to be connected using a single standardized interface socket and to improve plug and play capabilities WEP Wired Equivalent Privacy, a security protocol for wireless local area networks (WLANs) defined in the 802.11b standard. WEP is designed to provide the same level of security as that of a wired LAN. Wi-Fi Wi-Fi is a trademark of the Wi-Fi Alliance, founded in 1999 as Wireless Internet Compatibility Alliance (WICA), comprising more than 300 companies, whose products are certified by the Wi-Fi Alliance, based on the IEEE 802.11 standards (also called Wireless LAN (WLAN) and Wi-Fi). This certification warrants interoperability between different wireless devices. WPA Wi-Fi Protected Access is a certification program created by the Wi-Fi Alliance to indicate compliance with the security protocol created by the Wi-Fi Alliance to secure wireless computer networks. This protocol was created in response to several serious weaknesses researchers had found in the previous system, Wired Equivalent Privacy (WEP). WPA2 WPA2 replaced WPA; like WPA, WPA2 requires testing and certification by the Wi-Fi Alliance. WPA2 implements the mandatory elements of 802.11i. In particular, it introduces a new AES-based algorithm, CCMP, which is considered fully secure. For complete defenations and more information you can check WIKIPEDIA |
