    Default Can ADSL router+modem connect to another modem?

    Hi,

    In situations where the service provider provides an ADSL modem, we can use a broadband router to build a wifi connection or have multiple computers share the same internet connection.

    Is it possible to use an ADSL router (i.e., a router with built in modem) to connect to the modem in place of a broadband router? That is the connection would look like:
    Splitter --> ISP's Modem --> ADSL Router+Modem --> PCs/laptops

    Will this work? Or should we only have a broadband router in the 3rd position in blue above? The reason I ask is that it would make better sense to buy an ADSL router+modem so that it can be used with any other ADSL provider later, than buy a broadband router and have another modem.

    Did anyone try this? Will the sockets/ports allow this at all?

    Thanks.

    I am in PPPOE mode and the modem now is a Quidway WA1003A
    from previous post.
    Question all mixed up.
    Splitter --> ISP's Modem --> ADSL Router+Modem --> PCs/laptops
    Splitter==>> WA1003A ==>> LAN port ====>> Desktop/ or laptop ethernet port.
    WIfi mode ~~~~~~~~~~ ( wireless signals ) Laptop/s in Wif i mode

    Quidway WA-1003A ADSL MODEM MENU
    This ADSL modem/router+wifi can be used for one desk top and
    laptops in wifi. mode. ( USB PORT usually not used )

    I f you need to connect more computers then you can use a switch or HUB or buy another adsl modem with usually 4 LAN ports.

    Thanks essbebe, but I can see I did not make my question clear enough. So let me take an example.

    Reliance landline broadband provides a Modem and no router.

    1) Option 1: One can directly plug in the modem output to a pc to connect to internet.
    Splitter --> ISP's Modem --> PC/laptop

    2) Option 2: If one has to connect multiple pcs and use wifi, an adsl modem+router such as WA1003A that you mention has to be used, replacing the modem

    Splitter --> ADSL Router+Modem --> PCs/laptops

    3) I am not sure if Reliance works if we replace the modem with a router+modem such as WA1003A. I am guessing the modem has to remain in place due to ISP specific settings. I know this will work:

    Splitter --> ISP's Modem --> Broadband router --> PCs/laptops

    My question: Can i connect a ADSL router+modem (WA1003A) to the output of modem provided by reliance, instead of a broadband router? i.e., will the following work?

    Splitter --> ISP's Modem --> ADSL Router+Modem --> PCs/laptops

    If it does I will retain my BSNL WA1003A and forego 500 rupees than to buy a new router, for my reliance connection.

    i don't think so.anyway all ADSL modem+router can be used for any ISP providing ADSL connection you just have to change the settings a bit for a particular ISP.if reliance modem is an ADSL then you can use in its place any ADSL modem+router.

    Update from my trials:
    A modem cannot physically connect to an aDSL modem + router since both have the input as telephone wire socket and output as lan cable socket.
    Reliance wireline can be connected to a wifi modem + router easily, replacing the modem provided by Reliance.

    I also read that the ADSL modem can be connected to one of the LAN ports of the ADSL modem+router, but haven't been successful so far.
