What BSNL has supplied to you is an adsl modem.
Did you get any Manual or Installation CD ?

see these web sites . ( add to Bookmarks also )
    select your modem for settings.
Mention model make of your wifi router.
    ( some are 3 in one modem+router+wifi)

BSNL provides broadband via ASDL technology using telephone lines. So the modem must be an ADSL modem and not cable modem as you mentioned. Probably a typo error on your part.

If you wish to replace this modem with a wireless device, you will need an ADSL2+ Wireless Modem + Router. Just a plain wireless router will not do.

BSNL provides wireless modem+router for Rs. 1600/-. If your current modem is not working you can apply in written for a modem change. If the current modem is under warranty, you will get a free exchange. If not, you will have to pay - maybe some discount will be given for exchange.

BSNL Wireless modem/router are of two types:

    a) Type II (USB + Wireless): This modem is not very popular because it does not have Ethernet ports
    b) Type IV (4 Ethernet ports + Wireless): This modem is very popular. I recommend this one.

    Costs for both are same.

Once you have wireless at home, you can connect your psp also.
