Default System tray icon showing speed of 54 Mbps.

I have wifi BSNL BB 750 UL for my laptop. When I connect to the internet through wifi than the small computer icons which appear in system tray indicates a speed of 54 Mbps. At times it shows 46 Mpbs.

When I connect the internet through wire (ie Local Area Connection) than it indicates a speed of 100 Mbps. I'd like to know whether the speeds which are indicated in computer icons in system tray have any significance??

As it is showing less speed in wifi, so does it mean that i would be getting less speed in wifi than through wire?

Any help would be highly appreciated.

Smile System tray icon showing speed of 54 Mbps.

The system tray icon speed shows the maximum bandwidth supported by the connection(i.e wifi, ethernet). The speeds are different as your wifi modem supports only 54mbps whereas your ethernet card supports 100mbps. Eithere ways, it does not make any difference, since the connection you use has a bandwidth of only 256 kbps( 1mbps = 1024 kbps). So the modem sppeds do not affect your actual broadband speed.
You would have a very slight difference(less than few kbps)between wifi and ethernet as wifi is more prone to errors and this would always be there irrespective of the modems.

This indicates the max throughput you would get with that connection vis a vis respective connection mode you use.
If you have a faster broadband connection then 54mbps then it would restrict your speed to 54mbps but if your broadband connection speed is less then 54mbps then there is nothing to worry about as you would still be getting the max throughput your connection supports.
