Thumbs up Myth busted : You need to have Dial tone for the ADSL to work !

Last week, after some thunder-showers & lightning my phone went dead that means there was no dial tone and I was unable to make/receive any calls. I tried both the telephones in my home so as to make sure that it's not the fault at the equipment side.

But when I dialled my Dataone, it was working fine as usual. I had always heard & believed that you need to have dial tone for the phone to work from my dialup-days. The next day, I complained to the BSNL & the phone was working fine from the next day onwards. :thumbup1:
So what is the technical reason behind this ?

Is it because of the Voice frequency band went kaput because of any hardware fault and the DSLAM was working fine ?

Yes same with me too dear ;-) but its a boon that inspite of no dial tone / fone being dead our ADSL light is on, even in chennai two times this happened with my telephone and both times it happened on saturdays so till monday the phone could not be repaired, but the internet was working. ;-) Telephones people mentioned that due to lighting some problem happened and many telephones had to be restored, but even dont know howcome BB was not affected.

Dont know the reason, but thank god atleast broadband was not affected by the lightining and we could surf internet

I'm curious. Does this happens only with BSNL or with other providers also ?

This will happen in case of any ADSL provider. The voice and data circuits are different. Only in case when there is a physical damage to the telephone cable, then both services will be affected.

ADSL utilize frequencies that are not used by a voice telephone call. A splitter - or microfilter - allows a single telephone connection to be used for both ADSL service and voice calls at the same time.

BSNL provide internet on existing phone line and it comes from Exchange and they have Cards installed in exchange as for voice based (Phone) purpose and the same cable relay from the same card. if exchange having any issue like card is not getting response from the PSTN network then it become silent. this is the issue not hardware problem at customers if customer checked the line with different equipment.
