    Default Make my broadband wireless

    Hi. I currently have a Thomson Speedtouch 330 modem which is a wired broadband connection that only allows me to connect a single computer at a time to the internet. I want to go wireless, but as I get my internet free from orange I don't want to change my provider, just make my internet wireless. How do I go about it? What equipment do I need, how do I set it up and is it easy to do? Any help will be appreciated. Thanks

    meetdilip is right you need a router which costs anything between Rs2000 - Rs4000 I think! Then you will have a wireless connection.

    @Zeem1001

    Well how much are you ready to shell out to make your broadband wireless.?

    You can go for :

    1) Netgear WGR614 Wireless-G Router: Rs.1775/- (Price may vary a bit).

    2) Linksys Wireless-G Home Router with SpeedBurst (WRT54GH): Rs.1715/- (Price may vary a bit).

    For Specifications with comparison follow this link.

    Thanks for all your replies. Orange is a cellphone provider. They also provide home broadband for free if you have a contract with them.
    I should have mentioned this at the beginning - my speedtouch modem has a USB connection that goes into my laptop (which has a wireless card built in). Looking at the netgear routers they don't seem to allow you to plug a USB cable into them. Therefore I won't be able to plug the speedtouch modem into the router. So I'm struggelling to understand how it would work and how I would wire it up. Can anyone enlighten me. Thank you.

    1. Orange is a cellphone provider.
    You have a cellphone service from them.
    ( Model of cellphone used??
    cannot be used for Internet ????)
    so
    2.
    They also provide free home broadband for free ...... ( wifi USB card ???/ telephone line based broadband from some other ISP ??)
    3.
    speedtouch modem 330
    Input: to this modem from where ?
    output:
    has ONLY a USB connection
    that goes into my laptop (usbport )
    4.
    (which has a wireless card built in ) later.

    Problem:
    5..How to get WIFI signals using (Netgear) wifi router
    so that you can surf with your laptop in WIFI mode ?

    =========================
    6.Understand that your speedtouch modem 330 has ONLY a USB port output..
    Confirm.
    7. Free broadband service is
    (a) telephone line based
    b)or WIFI based
    (c)from ORANGE
    (d)or any other ISP ? Name:_______________
    8. Cellphone provided by ORANGE
    Model.make.number. Wifi enabled ?
    9. deleted.
    10. Can you surf the Internet now in your laptop?
    11. Did you get USB driver/s for your laptop ?
    12.. Can you access speedtouch330 modem settings pages ?

    Suggestion :
    . Get a new adsl modem having LAN RJ45and ( USB output. optional) cost approx Rs 1000 to Rs 1500/, provided Orange BB is from telephone line
    and a wifi router.
    BSNL Type 2 adslmodem+4lanport+wifi will cost Rs 1600/= plus 10.3 % taxes.

    Thomson Speedtouch 330 ADSL USB modem.

    It has got one RJ11 Port for ADSL, and USB Port as output to PC/Laptop.

    Thanks for your reply deepmohan. I'll look into buying either the Linksys WRT54 or the Netgear WGR614 tomorrow and see if it works. Is it easy to set up? What steps are needed to set it up?

    Thanks also for your reply essbebe. Just to clarify the set up, my cellphone is a Nokia 8800 on the Orange network, and my broadband is provided from the Orange network (for free while I have an Orange Cellphone) and is telephone line based. The speedtouch330 plugs into a DSL filter (on a wall socket) and the output is a USB connection only to my laptop. My Laptop has a built in wireless card which does work as I use it at work. I'm not sure if I can access the modem settings page. How can I find out? For the suggestions you've provided me with, have you got any model names and numbers? It'll make things easier for me to find.

    Thanks

    @zeem1001.
    please wait. for replies to (g) to (k) below.
    (13)Netgear Wgr614 v6 or v9 not suitable.
    ((14)WRT54 different models . checking up.

    (15)Basically you need a 3-in-0ne model
    adslmodem+4port LAN + wifi
    as Speedtouch does not have a LAN port. (not suitable for your requirement)

    From USB port you cannot connect Rj45 ( 8 wires)cable with Rj45 connectors at both ends.
    (16) you laptop also has an ethernet port
    (with a built-in card ), which needs rj45 cable, from an ADSL modem..

    -----------------------------------------------
    @deepmohan
    Please review. your post No 6 & 10..
    Wifi routers do not have Rj11 port.
    I have Netgear wgr614 V6 in use.

    These are wifi routers used to provide wifi connectivity along with an ADSL modem. Linksys and Netgear are famous brands in this field.

    Thanks again everyone for your replies. From what I'm gathering I need an asdl modem router with LAN and wifi. I then plug the cable that goes into the back of my current modem (speedtouch 330) into the new modem router and set up from there. I would have to put my orange username and password into the new modem router. Then I would be able to connect my wifi enabled laptop to it after entering the correct password. Is that correct? I've had a look at a few asdl modem routers. Can anyone suggest one for me? How about a linksys wag 120n. Will that do the job?
    Thanks

    @Zeem1001

    Yes you are absulotely right! you can go for Linksys WAG120N, it has got the RJ-11 Port.

    You can check out these two:

    Netgear DG834G

    If you have got a DSL Modem from bsnl(in your case) which dont have a WiFi, then we have to purchase one WiFi router. The RJ45 cable running from your DSL modem is plug-in into the WiFi router so now you have WiFi network in your home which can be used on Laptop or WiFi enabled devices with out wires to browse internet.
