Google takes another step in its strategy to unmask the Internet providers who have fallen into the temptation to filter traffic. As anticipated (Google takes on ISPs by their horns), it is preparing a set of Applications that let you know if an ISP is altering the traffic of the Internet connection.
Measurement Labs is the name of the platform that will support several free Software projects related to traffic analysis. It is a joint project of several academic organizations and is backed by Google, who will contribute its infrastructure in the form of 36 servers in 12 locations with connectivity 1 Gbps each.
Let's checkout few of the applications available:
In two other Applications, ShaperProbe, which analyzes whether a type of traffic is being prioritized over others, and NANO, that will report if an ISP is blocking traffic to a particular destination.
- Network Diagnostic Tool (NDT)- Test speed up and down that analyzes the packet headers to verify that the TCP / IP operating system is properly configured.
- Glasnost- Java Applet that simulates BitTorrent traffic and see if it is altered during transmission.
- NPAD (Network Path and Application Diagnosis)- Diagnose network performance by analyzing the jumps that link your computer to the server, identifying the bottleneck.
- Pathload2- Check the available bandwidth for your Internet connection.
Google's intention is to publish regular information about the practices of each ISP and give users the information needed to make the right decision when choosing your carrier.
