Thread: Choosing the best & fastest DNS server for oneself & summary of dns

Domain name system servers, DNS server for short, are used for resolving the name. See Deepmohan thread on that this thread is on choosing the best.



Google have released a multi platform software ( i.e. they are available for all software) called namebench. With it you can find which are the fastest dns server for you. Just run the script or exe file namebench.py or namebench.exe
It will take ten minutes.
After that time you will get :
Fastest individual response: Don't follow this as this can be a fluke.

Fastest mean reponse: They though quite appropriate but will not give the recommended one as they might be far away.

Recommended :They are nearer to you & fastest.

You will also get a graph url. You can see.

Don't be afraid if what you are getting as recommened don't included Open DNs or BSNL as they include both in test.
Graph url is quite long.

Run the script or program three time to get correct result.

Summary on DNS server ( I have included somne info deep have left)
You see when you enter url it is not known to any. As all internet address are Internet Protocol based i.e. XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX (where X are number).
Primary DNS server resolved you put on your configuration look up for url in its database for its IP.

But what if DNS server don't have that info?
It is quite possible & infact it do happen many time. Then secondary are used.

What even if they don't have?
This also happen many time. What! Yes. Then that server consult with other server. If even they don't have then they called root name server. Root Name Server is the heart of internet. But it is quite possible that even they don't have that url. Your search don't stop at that. They inturn consult the tld(top-level domains) server. Your url last part will always consist of some part very common like .net, .com or .org or some other. As of 5th feb 2010 there are 20 gTLDs (g=generic) & 248 ccTLDs (country code=cc like .co.uk .co.in e.t.c.) If even they don't have then you get server not found & you have been fooled by someone.

There's one more use of them: reverse dns looku. You can use them to determine a person url by typing their IP.
