Thread: Advantages of using Opera and Chrome browser

From another thread of which browser is the best, I see many people have chosen Chrome and Opera.
Because I haven't used either one of these browsers, I would like to know how they different from other browsers and what are their advantages?

Currently im using Firefox, and that seems to be perfect, is there anything additional in Chrome or Opera than Firefox which I or someone else should know about?

Chrome loads faster than Firefox. It is also better in terms of speed. In Opera you have Turbo mode which will help you decrease your bandwidth. There are lot of widget for Opera which adds new functions. I am posting this from Chrome. I too got extension like Firefox. But not as much as Firefox. Try it and check it yourselves. If you find it comfortable, continue using them.

I cant find any advantage in Chrome or Opera for my type of use. Loading time of Firefox is not a major issue unless no one really open and close browser window much often in one session. Browsing in latest Firefox nightly build (Minefield 3.7) is way much faster than previous versions and almost equally fast as in Chrome but as far as your line condition is good, DNS you using are well maintained, the difference between page load time in Chrome and Firefox is almost nothing. Opera turbo is only good for slower connections (none of use for me as internet speed is 4 mbps.) Widgets aren't that much useful as extensions in rival browsers. And about Chrome's extensions, not all are that much efficient as in Firefox e.g. ad block in chrome just hide ads rather than blocking them from root. So this extension can hide hide ads but cant serve other purposes like quicker page loading and saving data usages over ads as what Adblock+ in Firefox does. So Firefox is just fine for me. At last every browser has its own set of advantage and disadvantage and so they serve different purposes.

You are wrong. The ad blocker in chrome does not loads any ad.

Do you know how ad blocker works?
First they have a single file named urlfilter which is used to filter ads in the pages. The text file contains the urls of all the ad sites from where ads are loaded. When the ad blocker detects the url in the page which is in the file. It does not give the request to the server to load that ad.

That is only true about Firefox's ad block plus but not about Chrome's Ad block or Ad thwart. You can ask it directly to author of these two add ons of Chrome. I myself have interacted with Michael, one of the author of Chrome's ad block extensions. According to him, Google's policy doesn't let them to tweak much and they are limited to interfere with coding of browser. So in these circumstance, Google only let them to hide ad from page. These extensions first load the page with ads and within a fraction of seconds, make them to hide so you can hardly notice is. But to verify, do two simple things. Clear Chrome browser cache and open any single page with some amount of ads and with this extensions disabled. Count the data transfer with any good such software. Then clear the cache again, have new internet session to count data usages with ad block extension enabled and open the same page again. You will see that same amount of data is transferred. Conclusion is clear. While if you do same procedure in Firefox with ad block plus installed, you save some amount of data in later case as ads are being blocked before loading (not just hiding the ad).

Yes, I am very much sure about it as I have used Chrome with this extension much often. If you use it even for hour, you can notice it from behaviour that ads aren't actually being blocked before loading. However you can do as per what I have told to verify or simply go through user reviews of this extensions (link is posted), you can see most of the people complaining same (Michael is actually frustrated explaining the reason to every individual reviewer!). So ad blocking in Chrome is nightmare as of now & I have limited the use of this browser because of same reason.

Yeah, ad blocking in Opera possible you can even import ad blocking rules to Opera from Firefox's ad block plus lists (so you can block every ad banner which ad block plus does) however the process is tricky.

I love Opera only because it saves my much bandwidth as i am using limited plan, even this ad blocker in Opera saves much ........

Even my purpose of using ad blocker is same. But unfortunately, there is no way to block ads in Google (but there is way to just hide them!). And I don't think it will ever be possible, Reason: some strict policies of Google.

Opera is a good browser (faster than Firefox ofcourse!) however Firefox with some add ons (like Firebug, No script, TraceMonkey, Flashblock, Ad block plus) is just great!

This is good software to block ads but I have not tries it: Ad Blocker: Ad Muncher
It has 30 days trial period. After using 29 days uninstall it using Revo Uninstaller and install again, and will get more 30 days.

This seems to be good, will give it a try using Chrome. But what necessity of ad blocking software/extetion is too frequent updates to blocking rules (lists with advertisement URLs) so extension can block ads with more accuracy. Mostly user base does report such URLs to author & updated lists are passed to all users so they ads can be blocked further. However these internet ad placing companies are very smart. They change/modify URLs of banner much often! I have observed that Chrome's both ad blocking extensions do fail sometime to block (I mean to hide) ads.

Rep ++, now I am actually using opera with ad blocking method you described and its just great and effective than what I expected and better than other ways I had came across earlier. Couldn't find single a ad and browser is actually blocking (unlike Chrome) ads without affecting other page content. Page loading is much faster than Chrome. Now running Opera 10.51

Opening the homepage of this site 'without' ad blocking in Firefox or Opera consumed approx 570 KB of bandwidth (same in Chrome even if Ad block for Chrome is installed ) while with Ad block+ installed in Firefox or using the way described by you in Opera just consumed approx 170 KB of bandwidth. This is how much bandwidth you can save on each page (tested 3 times for each case clearing cache every time. Results must be vary from page to page and site to site depending upon ads placed but typically should produce similar trend). Have a browsing smarter, faster and more economical!
