Default How to: get max. speed of a connection

    Hi to all!

I have seen many posts saying that they are not getting max. speed of their connection or getting low speed. So here i give u the different tips u need to take to get good speed.

Use Open DNS or Google DNS
You should use Open DNS or Google DNS.Never use automatic DNS servers as they use the ISP DNS servers.like i am using BSNL Broadband. When i use Automatic DNS i get less speed but i get good speed when i use Open DNS.This is because ISP servers are unreliable. To change DNS Servers in Windows 7/Vista go to Control Panel>Network and Sharing Center>Change Adapter Settings>Local Area Connection>Properties>Internet Protocol Version 4>Properties>put dot in "Use the Following DNS Servers".Then use the Following DNS Servers:

    Open DNS
    Preferred DNS Server: 208.67.222.222
    Alternate DNS Server: 208.67.220.220

    Google DNS
    Preferred DNS Server: 8.8.8.8
    Alternate DNS Server: 8.8.4.4

    Use Download Manager
Using Download Manager will improve your direct download speed. It downloads from multiple sources simultaneously. You get good speed because of this. There are free as well as paid download managers. The main advantageof using download manager is that you can Resume/Pause/Stop the downloads.
    Try:
Free Download Manager(FDM): This Download Manager is free and is good too.I used this before.Download here

Internet Download Manager(IDM): This is the one i am using right now.Great Download manager but is Paid.Get a free trial here

Download Accelerator Plus(DAP): This one i used before.Gives u good speed.
Its available free as well as Paid.Download here

    Keep you System Virus Free
Virus may lower the speed of downloads. You should keep your system Virus Free.Below are some suggested antivirus programs.
Avast 5 Free Antivirus:Avast 5 is a good antivirus solution.Update it and it will remove all viruses.Download here

AVG 9.0 Free: This is not that good as AVG but AVG fans like it so download here

Avira Antivir Personal: This is also a good free antivirus.Reviews are good.Download here

    (For Torrents)Try Port Forwarding
Port Forwarding is an essential for getting max. speed.it always gives u better speeds.Port Forwarding is a way to get better number of seeds and peers. To Forward your Port go to PortForward.com - Port Forwarding Guides Listed by Manufacturer and Model and select your router and select your torrent client and follow the instructions.

    Line Quality
Line Quality indirectly affects your speeds.if your SNR values and Line Attenuation are good then you get good speeds. If u have poor SNR Values and Line Attenuation then u face many disconnections and u also get less speed.to know more about SNR Values and Line Attenuation follow:http://www.indiabroadband.net/showthread.php?p=38847

    (For Torrents)Always Download Healthy torrents
Always u should download torrents with a good seeders to leechers ratio.Like a 50 seeders and 50 leechers torrent is better than 500 seeders and 5000 leechers.

(For Torrents)Allow your Program through your Firewall
Always when using torrents allow your torrent client through your firewall firewall.Never let Firewall Block it.

    Try TCP Optimizer
TCP Optimizer from Speedguide.net is a great program. You should use it to increase your internet speed.
    Download TCP Optimizer here

Hope you like this guide on speeding up your internet speed.i will update when i get new tips to increase speed.

Good article. Some of my own observations:

DNS: Contrary to popular belief, I get good speed from BSNL DNS. But sometimes it is bad also. So I keep switching between openDNS and auto-DNS on case to case basis.

Download Managers: DMs do not increase your ISP speed. Many people wrongly believe so. What DMs do is optmize the download by using every ounce of the bandwidth available. This is done by opening splitting the download file in n parts and opening n (multiple) connections.

Without DM, the download is a serial transfer job - from start to end and speed may be limited by the source server, ISP speed, network jam, etc.

By using DMs, the parallel connections are opened. Several parts of the file are download simultaneously and joined back in proper sequence at the end. Thus a file is downloaded faster. The file is not sourced from multiple places but from the same place (URL).

    Rest is all very good.

I have used utorrent turbo Accelerator and really worked for me but only some times. You can try it but best in fast connections not in slow connections :Download uTorrent Turbo Accelerator 1.5.8 - A great p2p add-on for high download speed. - Softpedia

These accelerators really cannot accelerate downloads. Many of them are malwares. Those, which are not malwares, might just edit the maximum number of half-open TCP connections (set to 10 by default in Windows XP). Some of them change it to a very high value that it might finally result in some problem. Setting it around some 50 or so might do good. If you are using Windows Vista SP2 or Windows 7, you don't need to search around for Connection patchers because this limit seems has been removed in these.
Quote from Notable Changes in Windows Server 2008 SP2 and Windows Vista SP2:
SP2 removes the limit of 10 half open outbound TCP connections. By default, SP2 has no limit on the number of half open outbound TCP connections.
If you have speed problems with uTorrent, it is best to follow the official guide first: IF YOU HAVE SPEED ISSUES READ HERE FIRST - Forums - Torrent - The Lightweight and Efficient BitTorrent Client

Are the 'parts' of download file saved in the destination directory or some temporary folder before joining them together in proper sequence?

    You can adjust MTU
Linux Users Can Adjust it via adding mtu value to Network Configuration files(it varies for Redhat,Debian,Gentoo,Arch etc etc) situated at /etc/ directory.

for Windows users,You have some MTU Adjustment executables available:
PS:there are a lot of them.choose from google search lol!

1.Go to PortForward.com - Port Forwarding Guides Listed by Manufacturer and Model if you are in PPPOE(Always on internet mode)(User id and password stored in modem)do forward your ports by selecting a particular modem
    2.Always use open dns:208.67.222.222
    208.67.220.220
3.Get your line checked by line man if you are experiencing "LINK FAILURE" or ""DISCONNECTION""

Last,if you want more broadband speed,"PAY MORE" by upgrading your "CURRENT BROADBAND PLAN"
