Question LAN & internet sharing between Laptop & PC using ZTE 531B

I need to share internet connection between my laptop & desktop, as also want to share/transfer files between laptop & PC by establishing a LAN.

I have searched in the forum.Though there are threads on this topic, but none has led me to finish the desired task.

    I have the following:

    1. BSNL broadband connection.
    2. ZTE ZXDSL 531B wi-fi modem.
    3. Sony Vaio laptop with Vista Home Premium.
    4. Older desktop PC with D-Link PCI ethernet adapter card.

I can connect broadband internet on both - on laptop thru wireless and on desktop thru ethernet cable from ZTE 531B modem. But only one can be connected at a time.

I do not know anything about networking on my own.Hence i request that someone guides me step by step from scratch about setting up LAN and simultaneous internet.

This is my maiden post/request to the forum.Hope you people would help me by providing tutorial at the earliest. Thanks in advance.

Please check LINK No 2 in my signature.
In modem ( lan page enable DHCP
    enter 192.168.1.3 to say 192.168.1.10
save reboot wait for 2 minutes.
Also You should be in PPP/PPPoE mode
( Not "Bridged" ) in wan page.
( Means you enter UserId/Pw in the modem)
This should work to work both at the same time and any number of laptops in range.
    2.If not OK
start NETWORK ( both in Desktop and Laptop)
    LAN WLAN
    Properties
    Highlight TCP/IP
    Properties
    Select Obtain Ip address automatically.
    Apply Save.
    Feed back needed for more>>>>>

Thanks a lot for guiding me the procedure. I did exactly as advised, and yes, i was able to share net connection among two laptops. However, i still can not share/transfer files between these two laptops.
Similiarly, my Windows XP(SP3) desktop which connects to the router thru ethernet cable is still not the part of network of other two laptops. And it can not be connected to net while other laptops are connected to the net.
Pls tell me further steps for configuring the desktop to let it join the network so that i may share files and internet.
If I need to provide any further information/data, pls let me know.
Thanks again and my regards essbebe, "the helping hand".

@Sanjeev_man, I could try it only today, and posted the outcome above.

    type ipconfig /all
    Copy/paste data here.
    2. Laptop1 in wifi mode

Do not connect in Dialer Mode.
use PPP/PPPoE "Always On" mode and enter userId/PW in wan page.
Mention only the OS used in each system.
    Ipconfig /all not required.
    desktop OS used
    laptop 1 OS used
    laptop 2 OS used.
Confirm all three can connect to Internet
    at the same time .

I had already changed to always on PPP/PPPOE mode and saved UserID/PW on WAN page of router setup.

All three can't connect at the same time.

see Post No 2 Item 2 and confirm, when connected to Internet Desktop and laptop1 &laptop2 all can work at the same time.
Presume you have enabled DHCP in modem
    Presume you have selected
"Obtain IP address automatically" in all 3 systems.
    confirm.

DHCP enabled in modem, and obtain IP address automatically in all 3 systems is selected.
Still, desktop can not connect to internet when laptops are connected (to net).
Moreover, desktop does not appear in "network & sharing center: view computers & devices" in laptop . I think there is some conflict.
Can i delete all network connections from all three systems, and then start afresh to re-create necessary network? Pls advise.

The ipconfig/ all posted by you in Post No 6, shows you are in "Dialer" mode.
    2.
    In Desktop

    Obtain IP address automatically
    DNS also same or enter
    8.8.8.8. and 208.67.220.220
    Apply Save.

    Check ethernet card is enabled.
    If needed download latest drivers.
    same page top " configure")
    3.
After the changes are made post FRESH
    ipconfig /all for desktop.
Copy/Paste data here. ( No code method)
    4..
Confirm RJ45 cable from modem connected to (a)Desktop
