    Default adsl router as Bridge

    Hi,

I have been reading the forums both indian and overseas but failing to find a solution to my query. I have a mtnl based internet connection linked to internet using HG510 modem. I have a requirement to establish a wifi network at home to allow me to link my laptop on the network.

I had been to UK some time back and had a tiscali provided siements gigaset se 587. and I would like to use it in bridge mode with my mtnl modem.

I had a tata broadband earlier with which I was successfully able to connect this modem too. but with mtnl I am facing a peculiar issue.

My router does get connected and even takes me to internet but after some time like a few minutes it jams the network. i am able to fix the issue only by repairing connection from my desktop. using the repair function of windows.

    any help will be appreciated.

    keep up the good work

    regards
    Sandy

You are probabbly using WPA2 security setting... if you are then try WEP and see it if goes ok.

Have a look at the network properties TCP/IP4 .. is the IP and DNS set to automatic?

If the above trick doesn't help you then please let me know which OS are you using and which firewall and anti virus.

    1. Ask your ISP to refresh/change your port at exchange. It happens mainly due to port issue.

    2. Reset the modem and configure it again.

    3. Check the splitter. Connect directly to the modem and try.

    4. Try another modem at your place and check.

    Hi Dilip
not sure if i understand it... the internet works fine with the cable adsl broadband mtnl has provided . i am just trying to bridge another modem with in this case is a adsl wifi to the cable adsl mode,
adsl mtnl->gigaset modem with dhcp disabled
    tried with both bridge options
    RFC 2516 PPPoE
    RFC 2364 PPPoA
    RFC 2684 Bridge
    RFC 2364 Bridge/IP

the last one ask him to provide a ip ,......what bother me is that it worked fine with tata but mtnl it differs. could this be a problem that they are both of type adsl

did as advised, i changed my wireless security twice at a point even disabled it completely.
one weird behaviour i noticed was that both my desktop and laptop for a moment started displaying my wifi adsl router webpage on 192.168.1.1 instead of my mtnl webpage.

the net occurred after i disabled dhcp on the gigaset modem. attaching ipconfig details for both when connected to gigaset and when connected to my non wifi mtnl router
but it kept jamming both my desktop and laptop every 5 minutes. intersteingly when i tried a repair the net was working before I could click on the reset adaptor prompted.

I have a vista home on my laptopm and a xp professional sp3 on my desktop.

    thanks

    No,you should not Disable Dhcp!
    PPPOE is Preferred!

    Steps:
    • Configure TCP/IP setting on laptop/PC to automatic.
    • Use this guide: How to set TCP/IP settings
    • Configure the MTNL modem
      • Connect external telephone line to splitter at the first entry point in the house.
      • Connect data port of splitter to MTNL modem line-in.
      • Connect the laptop/desktop via ethernet.
      • Connect to router setup page (http://192.168.1.1)
      • Setup the modem in PPPoE mode.
      • Keep the internal IP address of the Seimens router to 192.168.1.1
      • Enable DHCP on this modem.
      • Ensure that you are able to connect to the internet.
    • Configure the Seimens router
      • Unhook the PC from the MTNL modem
      • Connect ethernet out of MTNL modem to Internet-in (ethernet) port of Seimens router.
      • Connect Seimens router's ethernet-out to laptop/desktop.
      • Configure the router in bridge mode (aka automatic DHCP mode)
      • Connect to modem setup page (http://192.168.1.1)
      • Important: Change the internal IP address of the Seimens router to 192.168.2.1
      • At this point you will have to login again to the Seimens web page as http://192.168.2.1
      • Setup the router in bridge mode.
      • Enable DHCP on this router.
      • Ensure that you are able to connect to the internet.
After everything is done, you can do other changes such as changing default password for both modem and router, configure wireless security.
